I was one of the idiots who managed to mangle the Torx screw beyond any hope of removing it the proper way. I ordered another then managed to lose it. Just found it again yesterday. Hopefully I'll find the time to get to it next week. Yea, it's been an ordeal but looking on the positive side, the paint is completely dry since I painted it the day I got it.

My first mistake was trying to do it without removing the tailgate. :bananadead:

Installed my anti theft device. That factory screw gave me a hell of a fight. I ended up drilling it. Very satisfied with the results and the quality of the product.
    Thanks OP.

2020 Limited, got mine installed today, with only minor difficulties. Just had to go to Autozone to buy the T40 tips since that's the only size I didn't have. Used my Ryobi 18v impact driver to soften up the factory bolt, then rolled to the breaker bar. Smooth, even pressure and it backed right out. No heat, no hammering. Flat bladed screwgie to scrape excess factory sealant back enough to clear the bracket. Hardest part was installing new security screw with limited clearance. Excellent product, WAY better than hose clamp I used on my last Tacoma. Thanks Chris!

I‘ll admit that I was pretty reluctant to even buy this because I didn’t want to deal with the torx bolt. I sat on purchasing this for a couple months, but decided to pull the trigger as I was looking for little mods to keep me entertained. All that worry for nothing! Though I was prepared for the fight, the bolt came out easily (like WTF).

My steps sound long, but are really fast and easy ... Remove tailgate, hit bolt with hammer and punch a couple times, heat for maybe 10 seconds, used a breaker bar. Removal was almost anticlimactic.

In the end, this was an easy mod to do for a little peace of mind.

Haven't done it yet as I am just keeping mine locked until I get an electric lock. But, there is a way to use a hose clamp to make it much more difficult to steal the tailgate. Hose clamps are what 2-3 bucks.

    Hose clamps are too generic.

Common snips can remove those pretty quick.

Thanks. Just a bit of heat should get mine out then. I still have not tried again.

Just make sure your hex is in good, then slowly try...mine was very tight but came out without rounding the screw. And use some kind of a snipe for better easier turning

I rounded it out good on my first go. I'll need to slot it to get it out.

I was using a tight fitting bit with a ratchet lined up well. The thread lock got the best of it.

Common, if the rascal has some snips to cut, I’m sure he has a T40 to remove the bolt as well. Specially when everything is exposed in here on TW, lol. :spy:
