Is my 2wd TRD sport destined to just be a mall crawler?

Had a 2017 4x2 TRD Sport for the past 2 years, just traded it in for 2020 TRD OR 4x4 last week. I felt the same way you did. Didn’t think 4x4 was needed until last winter when I slipped all over the place heading to work. With the Tacoma’s great trade in value and some dealer hopping, I was able to get into a new ride for $50 a month more.

 

Drive your truck for now and if there comes a time when you really actually need 4x4 and it’s not just in your head being insecure about your truck then consider trading for a 4x4. Until that need comes enjoy your badass truck that is plenty capable of getting anywhere you need to

 

Sometimes i forget to engage 4hi when im on forest roads so i mean u can still hit trails in 2wd just know ur limits and buy some recovery boards

 

You can do a TON with a 2wd and locker. That’s my plan eventually is to grab recovery gear and locker for the “just in case” and learn how to use the gear correctly.

I’ve seen 4wd trucks get stuck because they had crappy tires on them and had to be pulled out.

I am also one of those people who knows 3 different guys with 4WD trucks that haven’t used it once and they bought their trucks long before I did.

 

That’s not all that different than the mall parking lots we have here.

 

2WD will make you a better off-road driver.

 

This is me.. i can do all the off-roading i want with a 2wd.. or even better it pulls my Honda to where i want to go off-road! I love my truck.. it’s perfect (for me)

 

4wd will have poor drivers further away from help when they get stuck.

4wd makes some folks think because they can go better in slick conditions (snow, ice) that they can stop better too.

My 2wd only has 5 lugnuts, 15" wheels and a 2.7. But it does exactly what I bought it to do. Haul bulky stuff, kayaks, bicycles, etc.

Buy what you need (and can afford) and don't worry about what others have or think. You'll wind up a lot happier.

 

I think some of you are confusing gravel roads with off roading .

 

I have a 2WD and can drive on sand, muddy farm roads, and have taken it up a mountain in a snow storm in WV no problem. You can go a lot of places!

 

Not me. I used to drive in 2wd to improve my skills and judgement, then use 4wd to get out when trouble arose. So it did make me a better driver.

This was on the job, so it was even more fun.

After a while, I started winning lunches from engineers out on field trips. My boss would bet them I could drive further across (whatever obstacle) in 2wd then they could in 4wd.

Then I'd haul them out. But one or two I might have let sweat it (Fl summer in a swamp) for a little before retrieving them.

 

Make it a pre-runner. Most of the guys out in the desert are running 2wd pre-runners.

2WD with decent tires and some recovery gear will still get you a lot of places. If you find yourself getting stuck then consider upgrading.

 

I have had 4wd's for the most part of the last 25 years. Most have been pretty much stock but my current one is a lifted 2011 trd sport 4wd on 33s with a winch. There is a difference between off roading and driving off pavement. My current ride is lifted and has bigger tires and a winch and such on it because I am always the only truck when I go out, and I'm usually by myself. I have the stuff to increase my odds of getting out if something comes up. But I do most of my driving in 2wd. Good tires aired down and some sense will get you to and back from a lot of places. The best tool for driving is between your ears. And always listen to your gut. If you feel uneasy about something, go back.

Where do you live? What state?

4x4 is nice but highly overrated for the vast majority of people. In Anza-Borrego I could go many places without 4wd engaged. Even my older 2007 2wd 4 cylinder Taco went all over the desert, including Death Valley, Nevada, and Utah. Amazing where I took that 2wd stocker.

 

You could always lower it and make a street truck
