Not good at all. Sounds like a damaged clutch or blown compressor....

Wishing you a simple and cheap AC Compressor Clutch...

There really should be a sticky in each generation forum for this. I found a bunch of threads in this forum, but none seem to answer my question.

My son has an '11 Tacoma and texted me yesterday that the fan works on low and high, but not medium. My first thought was either someone kicked the resister connector and it partially disconnected or the resister was bad.

That doesn't seem to be the answer from what I read here. Someone in this thread briefly mentioned that problem, but I didn't see if there was an answer.

If it's in another thread an someone can point me to it, I'd appreciate it. If not, maybe someone can explain what the problem and the fix are.

I've replaced a lot of blower motors on Japanese cars including Toyotas, Honda, and Nissan. Much easier than the American makes I did back in the 1970s and 1980s. You had to take the entire dash out to get to the fan on most of them. The mid 1970s GM A body cars required removing the right fender to change the fan.

Im not sure, and in my case it seemed like it was the resistor and the blower motor. I would've never fixed it without everyone here so I'm sure you'll find someone knowledgable enough to help you!!

Use a plastic knife to pop out the climate control. Unplug the fan switch connector and see if it looks burnt.

Thank you. I'll pass this along to my son. If it does look burned is the switch available individually or should he look for a 2nd Gen climate control panel? Same question regarding the wiring/connector. He can do this level of repair, he's actually pretty handy. It's something I can do really easily, but he lives 800 miles away, so that's not going to happen real soon.

My son applied some "percussive maintenance" using his foot and all three speeds are working now. I suggested he still stick his head under there and look for signs of burned/melted wires or connectors. Based on what he said, my guess is that the resister connector is the culprit.

Checking and replacing the resistor is pretty easy and there's YouTube videos of how to that I think were shared in this thread, if not they're easy to search and find. Hope he figures it out!
