Hey guys, I can't help but notice that most guys seem to mount their RTT's to bed racks and sometimes on canopies (camper shells) and it's left me wondering... what's the realistic static weight carrying capacity of our double cab roof? Could one safely run an RTT on the cab with two people in it? Anyone with experience? I assume the use of bed racks is preferred due to load capacity but I'd love to get some feedback either way.

You can hold a lot. Access Cabs are weaker and mine is fine.

I was thinking direct mount, specifically a prinsu rack.

Ya me too. I've been looking either Baja rack or prinsu. Plus all I been reading is Toyota Dynamic load ( while driving ) is 200lbs. And Static load (truck Parked) is double or close to 500lbs.

I don't understand the physics of this. It would make me nervous as hell to climb up into that when you're just out over the open air before placing your weight on the actual cab.

I mean, guys use them, so I'm sure they work, but I'd clench climbing into that thing every time.

What's their secret to defying physics on that? Just REALLY strong mounts and tubing?

I read somewhere that the AC's roof is reinforced to deal with the lack of B pillar.

Also, we close the doors before getting in.

However, I switched it up recently just because I like having weight on the back for traction.

I'm getting serious about purchasing an rtt now with my prinsu on the way. I like the annex entrance of the tepui autanas. I'm interested in a rugged rtt that handles wind and rain well. Might need a nudge in the right direction. I'll be mounting over the cab on my DCLB and won't ever have more than 2 people in it, but open to the idea of a 3 man tent for comfort IF it fits well. I'm also contemplating making a fairing for the tent when driving so leaving room at the front of the rack for one would be good.

You have a double cab, you can fit a Mt. Shasta from CVT nicely. They just came out with the Summit Series, Equivalent to Tepui's Ruggedized. The Autana is a similar size. They make a ruggedized version that would serve you well. Both those tents are one size up from mine. I'm looking for a bigger one in the future now that I have the 4runner.

I used to have my RTT on my Thule square bars, worked just fine. However, I did just switch to a bed bars so I can leave my RTT on my truck all summer and not have to worry about parking in garages. It is also way easier to get the cover on now that it is lower.

Looks good! I went into a parking structure last night and barely fit! I'm at 8'1" with my tent on and the structure was 8'2"

How much weight do you have in the tent (when you had it mounted on the cab of your access cab?)

Tent weighed about 110 and two humans weighed about 320 so about 450 rounding up. 110 when moving since just the tent.

Thanks! And you never had any problems with it at all? Do you know what Toyota recommended weight is for the access cab roof? Also what year is yours?

toyota does not make a roof rack for the access cab roof so I would say 0 weight recommended from factory? haha.

You will have to drill into your roof for this. Access cab roof is strong, but not as strong as the double cab due to lack of b pillar between the doors, but still plenty strong. That truck as a 2007. Same construction through to 2015.

How hard are these things (rtt) to frequently take off your roof and put back on? Need to fit in my garage at night, damn tweakers steal everything not bolted down.

You can get something like this that makes it easier, but keep in mind the tent weighs 200 pounds or so. Also it will still be a pain in the ass.

    https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/quick-release-tent-mount-kit.html

Mine fell off my old 4runner when I was taking it off by myself one time and I tore two hernias in my stomach. Was lovely. Just be more careful than I am.

Thanks, it's just not an option. I'm not kidding when i say tweakers will steal it or destroy it within a week if i park outside. I have a topper as well so that is a non starter.
