Spare Tire Question

I am running 285/75R16 on my new 2020 OR. I currently do not own a jack that will work with my applcation, so I cannot test this.
I need to know if this tire size will fit in the spare tire area without having issues from the exhaust.

Also what is the most cost effective/ reliable way to jack the truck up. I have a 3" bilstein 5100 lift so the OEM jack is inefective.

 

Damn didn't even think about the ability to jack the truck up after lift/tires. Curious about this one too.

 

A block of wood would give you the height you need. Just be careful if the ground isn’t perfectly level. I have a 255/85 under my truck. It fits but needs to be pulled back towards the hitch. It’s close to the exhaust but I haven’t had any issues with rubber melting.

 

Jack from under the rear axle or under the lower control arm and you can test fit for yourself

 

People also bend tabs under the truck to fit a larger spare. I have also seen others on this forum move the hoist back towards the hitch to make the spare fit with better axle clearance.

 

I bought a regular jack that will work with the larger tires that I carry in my toolbox. As mentioned above, 255/85s fit well if you bend the tabs and pull it towards the hitch as you pull it up.

Hah! I haven’t tried to use the factory bottle jack either. I have been using my floor jack every time. However, I don’t see why a typical 2-3” lift would render the factory jack useless. The total droop of the suspension is the same. Taller tires on the other hand could pose a problem, but 33’s only add an inch.

OP, what points on the truck are you unable to use the factory jack on? The LCA? The rear diff? The leaf spring u-bolt bracket? I would guess any of those would work with the factory jack, but I have not actually tried. I think I have a small project for after work.

 

I use a Hi Lift jack, but you have to have good lift points, like a slider.

 

It is useless I promise.

 

As mentioned, I have a 255/85 in there, which is a touch taller. I don't see width causing an issue. Some bend the tabs, mine has been ok. The other question, is does a 285 fit in the front on a spare rim? 255s clear, but it's close.

 

As mentioned, the stock jack will still work but you'll likely have to jack from the axle in the back and control arm in the front. Those locations are only a bit more than an inch farther from the ground than stock (because of your bigger tires) and the jack has enough lift to do that. I actually prefer that to jacking from the frame since you don't have to lift the entire uncompressed suspension off the ground.

Ya no doubt, unless you need to uncompress the suspension to remove a coil over or something, there is no need.

The only time I have used the factory jack on the frame was when I got high centered with zero recovery tools and it was the only place I could dig a hole and get a jack underneath the truck.

 

Get sliders and a high lift. Works like a charm.

 

How is adding an inch of ground clearance rendering all of these jacks useless? I have 35s and still use bottle jacks when wheeling....Did the rear diff magically shave 3-4"?

 

Mine does not lift far enough without wrestling the tire off and swaying the truck too much for my liking. I have 265/70/r17's. I'm not sure if it loses some of that hydraulic power as it reaches near the top of its rise or what but it does practically nothing when it gets high.

Edit: I also don't jack my truck up from the rear diff if thats what you are suggesting.

That’s likely your problem. What jack point do you use? The LCA, rear diff, or leaf spring u-bolt bracket on the axle should likely work with any reasonable sized tire. I’m not even not sure if a stock truck can be lifted by the frame using the factory jack.

 

Not sure but I had a flat a few months back and maxed out my factory bottle jack without getting the height I needed to change a full size spare. I had to deflate the spare a lot to make it work.

No lift, upsized tires, flat concrete surface in a parking garage.
