The problem is that often things that are supposed to be "free", end up being anything but after your time, effort and anxieties experienced.
You wouldn't believe what "free oil changes" have ended up costing some C7 Corvette owners with dry-sump engines.

Everything from over-filling to under-filling (dry sump C7s require aprox 9.5 qts, wet sump 6 qts), oil filters too tight, not tight enough to filling coolant reservoirs with oil. Oil and coolant reservoirs are right next to one another on a C7 Corvette. Thus I change my own oil.

Took mine in last week for 10K free service, oil and filter, tire rotation etc. at 5K miles - I’m old school and no way I’m gonna run 10K miles before changing oil on a break-in of a new engine synthetic oil or not . They cleaned waiting area, social distancing, I spent most of the time outside. About 45 later minutes I was on my way not a problem. Yeah I could rotate tires myself and change the oil myself but it’s free and the dealer is a good one. You paid for that “free service” when you bought the truck kinda tarded not to use it imho o_O

They probably don't want to get in your truck just as much as you don't want them to - no one will do a better job on your own stuff than yourself.

I think, its up to each person, their preferences, and the dealership in that area. I have a good one, and a bad one. I can change my own oil, but, why not let them do it.

My first change left a fairly large oil stain on my seat. Went directly back and they "cleaned" it. Was still there when it dried. I called and left several voicemails for people, sent multiple emails, and then started calling and texting my sales guy. Never got a response. Next trip in, made them clean it again, which finally got it mostly out, but then they bent my license plate in half and put the access panel on my skid in backwards and cross threaded the bolt. Had to remove with an impact and replace the bolt.

They stained my seat on the first visit too, second visit they pulled one of the stitches out (screw driver hooked into one of the loops and pulled it out). I ended up fixing those issues myself since I didnt trust them. In general, my dealer is shit and I dont trust them. They will do warranty work until my warranty is expired, after that I will repair everything myself.

i Brought line in for its 10k last week. Place was not busy at all. I would do them myself if it was t a lease, but I think that having the dealership sign off on intervals is good for the paperwork side of things. Planning on buying after the lease, but whatever hahah

Due to COVID-19, I’m also contemplating when to take my Tacoma in for its first service. I’ve gotten a few email reminders over the past weeks.

Obviously, there is a huge push on this forum towards self-service, but I allow the dealership to service my new vehicles, especially while under warranty, and in the case of ToyotaCare there is no out of pocket expense on my part. The dealership service department has the necessary tools and equipment and trained personnel to properly complete maintenance compared to my limited knowledge, experience and resources. Plus, if anything goes wrong, it’s on the dealer not me.
