    • Looking for pros and cons, mainly cons to owning a 2017 TacoTRD Off Road. I'm thinking of purchasing one. It had one owner. Was put up for sale in July 2019 with 17,327 miles. Here it is May and it has 17,393 miles now. I asked the salesman why didn't anyone want to buy it. He said he honestly thinks it's the color, what do you think??? It has been sitting outside on the lot for 10 months and has been driven for test drives only- 66 miles! What could be wrong with it now after sitting for 10 months. Input please!!! Also, they dropped the price by $7000. Initially was $34,995, now $27,995. I'm supposed to go look at the truck this coming Tuesday so if anyone has any input or advice please let me know. Thanks in advance.taco.jpg

First off, make sure it is an Offroad (w/ crawl control, locking rear, and MTS). A lot of people try to do a faux pro/offroad by putting decals and what not.
If I am looking at it correctly, that is the Inferno color correct? that is a limited edition color, they don't even make that color anymore for 2020.
If it's fully stock, I would get it in a hard beat at that price. The initial price was a bit high in my opinion for my area.

The pros and cons would depend on what type of driving you plan to do with this vehicle and what other type of vehicles you have driven. Me coming from driving Ranger Rover and Silverado, the ride was stiff and uncomfortable, but so are other types of vehicles in the Tacoma's mid-size truck class. I would put the Tacoma more in the bottom though in terms of seating comfort in it's class.

I also didn't like the gearing and tune (kinda sluggish for a truck in my opinion). Majority of people won't even notice it, but most of the vehicles I have owned, I had it tuned and modded to my specification/liking. Hence why my taco is pretty modded and most of the mods are not even cosmetic but performance-wise.

Take it for a test drive and really sit on it. Like I said, the price will depend on where you are. In my market 2017 TRD OR goes for $26-30k. Shop around and see what they are going for in your area. If you are up north where it snows and they salt the road, it'll be cheaper due to the frame rust Tacoma is known for if not taken care of properly.

Mystery solved. It sat because the dealer is greedy. Run the VIN on Toyota website to see the service history. I paid $35.5k new for my 2017 OR and that was with the Premium and Tech packages.

Like the other poster said, confirm it's a real OR, and check for options, and make sure it's never been crashed. Then offer $26k. If it's glued to the lot like you say they might really work with you to make a deal.

ZekeR7 it's def an OffRoad. Has the crawl and MTNS and locking rear. I have a Nissan Frontier now, hate it! And I had a GMC Sonoma some years ago, plus a 2wd Toyota pickup (loved it, it plowed thru the snow!!!) Yes inferno color in the pic. I am going to test drive it and check it out. Thanks a lot for your input!!

Is it 2wd or 4wd? What extra options? Extended warranty?

they should be desperate by now. Offer them less

I too say do it if it can be had for $26-$27k. Negotiate an extended Toyota warranty if you’re uncomfortable about the history and maintenance. Inferno rocks, but I might be biased. :)

if it has premium and tech packages and 4 wheel drive that would be a fair price. If you are financing that vehicle you should be able to negotiate another 7-10 % off that $27,995.

I paid 28k for mine last summer with about the same mileage on it, though it does have a MT, sold the topper and the steps about a month after I bought it, here good used tacos at a good price are very hard to come by. The Inferno is impossible to find

Sounds like a fair price at 28. Test drive it and if you like it. Check the rear diff for oil seepage, diff howl at 55mph, hood glue.

pink_pony it is a 4WD and has locking rear diff, multi-terrain select/crawl control, hill start assist control. 1 yr/12,000 mi bumper to bumper and 7 year/100,000 mi powertrain warr.

Not a bad price then. I would play hard ball, give them an offer $1500 less and walk away if they say no without at least coming down some, offering extra warranty, or some other incentive.

Make sure it’s a highway test drive. Other than being greedy, there may be a ‘hidden’ reason why it has sat.

    maybe rear diff howl
    Maybe paint chip/flaky somewhere
    Oil seepage—-anywhere
Hell I’d maybe talk them into new tires and lube

but definitely try to get it on the highway. Feel for any vibrations or rumble strip when decel.

if it checks out, that’s a golden ticket! Good luck

Good luck today TW. I hope the test drive goes well and you either get the deal you want, or move on to the next.
