Want to Buy 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 or TRD OR 4x4

Exactly! I got a Sport because I wanted a Sport. Be realistic about what you want. I went through the built up 4x4 stage and just outgrew it. I love my Sport, the ride is great, it's comfortable, and I got a "skewp". YMMV

 

Just gonna throw my two cents in. Everyone has made some good points about picking the vehicle. I would like to share my taco story. I bought a 2018 SR5 double cab 4x4. The truck was great. I decided it would be a "good" idea to go get a 2019 TRD Pro. I intended to start overlanding and all. Life happens and now I have an overpriced daily driver. Over the road the SR5 was awesome and could have done everything i do in my small crawler. Also the scoop and stance of the offroad makes it harder to see over the hood.

 

Agreed crawl control is a gimmick

 

I have never driven the sport so I don't know but I am assuming that you could drive off road in most places with your sport no problem, right? I mean I am not over landing across the frozen tundra. I do drive on some pretty hairy roads in Northern Quebec and Upstate New York but my guess is the sport would be totally fine in those situations. I was curious to hear if that assumption was true ...

 

It totally is ... 100% ... no argument there ... but I will say this ... it is absolutely glorious if you are having your 8 year old driving on a bumpy back country road ... I know, I know, I am a terrible parent. But my gosh that is some serious fun right there.

 

I wanted to get the OR but theres only one with Manual and the color i want, so I found the TRD Sport with manual and the color. OR was $44k and the TRD Sport was less which i got for $33k. The TRD Sport have everything I asked for but I really didnt care for leather or sunroof. It has front camera, dual auto zone climate, LED headlight, and bed led light. I am happy with it!

That depends if you really off-road a lot then you will need the locker. I am switching the shocks to Bilstein 5100 from Hitachi Shocks by the end of this month for better ride quality. Hitachi doesnt impress me at all.

I plan to add ARB Air Locker in the future. I may be moving to Colorado in few years.

 

My buddy had those on his 2013 DCLB sport. Was a pretty good ride, yes. I guess they stopped using bilsteins to cut costs. Just like with other things on 3rd gen taco.

 

I had a 2008 Off Road, 2016 Sport, 2017 Off Road, and now a 2020 Sport. I enjoyed my Off Road, but I never had a need for the rear locker or crawl control. It was cool to have it, but in south GA, 4wd is really all I need.

If you're doing serious off roading, the locker and crawl control would probably be useful. If not, it's really personal preference. Definitely test drive both. For me there were a few things that swayed me towards the Sport:

- I actually like the scoop. Even though it's non-functional, it just looks better to me. The scoop makes the hood look like it's no so long and little better proportioned. But that's just me.
- I also like the way the Sport drives and handles. The OR was nice and plush, but it had more body roll and would nose dive under all but the easiest of braking. The Sport still rides good, but the stiffer suspension keeps it a little more composed on the road, which where I spend the majority of my time.
- The stock tires are better on the OR, but when it comes time to replace them, it seems like there are more options with the 17 inch wheel, without having to go to an E-load tire. I don't want to replace the wheels, so I like having the option to get lighter weight all terrain tires. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place or something, but most of what I found when looking at tires for my OR was E-load.
- I like the color matched fender flares and all that. Nothing wrong with the black flares, just a personal preference.
- Lastly, I just wanted a Sport this time. I know I don't need the locker or crawl control on the OR, so a 4x4 Sport seemed to suit me nicely.

All of these trucks are pretty capable off road, so for me it came down to personal preference. In the end, though, I would be happy driving any of them. SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, TRD Pro, or even the Limited. They're all good trucks.

I went through the same quandary when I was looking to buy in March. Both the OR and Sport were pretty much in the same price range for me with the options I wanted. I was considering the OR because I felt I was getting more for my money with the off road features it had that the Sport didn't. As for the Sport, I just loved the look of it over the OR. As much as people bash the non-functioning scoop, I really liked it along with the color matched fenders. When I was looking at both models at the dealership, my eye was always drawn to the Sport over the OR.

So the question was to go with more function with the OR or go with looks for the Sport? At the end of the day, I chose the Sport for the looks. It boiled down to just being honest with myself. The off-road functions on the OR would be a waste on a guy like me. I never go off road and figured on the rare occasion that I would have/need to, the Sport would be able to handle it fine. Plus, I knew if I got the OR, I would be spending money to make it look like a Sport. I'm about a month into my ownership and have zero regrets going with the Sport.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either, but just be honest with yourself as to what you really want and what you are going to use it for.

Seems like styling of SPORT 4x4 has small edge over the OR 4x4 - as for Mods I ll be adding 285-315 size off road grapplers, so will the SPORT 4x4 be equal to OR 4x4 for off road with Eibachs lift, or is the OFF Road still better?

 

you are probably going to want to re-gear on either one.

 

Am I the only one that doesn't like the fake hood scoop? Not having it on the off-road was a feature for me but to each his own.

 

Definitely not the only one, but in the minority for sure. I like how bulky the hood looks. I would take it with just the middle hump and no scoop as well. Flat hood makes the truck look a little weak to me (which is ironic since it is the one with bigger differentials and lockers)

 

I got the 2020 OR instead of the Sport. I test drove both and didn't find much difference, so for me it came down to:

- Preferred the shorter box on the OR vs Sport
- Didn't like the hood scoop on the Sport from behind the wheel
- Liked the looks of the OR better. Didn't like the color matched parts on the Sport
- Wheels made no difference, I just regeared and am putting new rims and some 295's on it along with the Elka coilovers

It's all just personal preference really. Pricing is pretty close so it's just a few minor features you have to decide on.

 

Come up to Clovis and take my 4 month old 19 Pro away...2k miles. Already did the wheels and obnoxious 1k bedcover for you..

This feature came on my truck and I can straight up say that I will likely NEVER use it. Crawl control had no bearing whatsoever on my purchase. If anyone is on the fence, don’t buy an auto for that stupid feature, buy an auto because you WANT an auto.
