That's obvious and was already stated. The question was would there be an issue if I swapped the plugs. Does anyone have first-hand or specific knowledge? What else is part of the California emissions other than the sensor?

A/F sensors have a different plug than O2 sensor. If the plugs don't mate you have the wrong replacement sensor and A/F are not interchangeable with O2 sensors. Changing plug pins does not change sensor function fron O2 to A/F.

Does the upstream sensor you are replacing look like sensor on top or bottom in pic?IMG_20191005_161247559.jpg

Is the difference the CA sensor has a heater built in? It would have 4 wires instead of 2. The heater would allow it to get to working temperature faster which might be needed for stricker CA standards.

DrZ is correct. The PCM is looking for a specific ohm reading through the heater circuit of the A/F - O2 sensor. If the cold ohm reading is incorrect then when it heats up the hot reading will be off. There is a ohm spec for the heater side but at this moment I cant locate it.

Also just replaced an O2 sensor in my 2002 2.4L. Code reader said it was the upper sensor that was bad but I bought a upper and lower as a set on eBay. They did not fit. Plug on the upper was reversed from what was on the truck. Sent it back and ordered another that fit correctly. However, now my check engine light is off but truck jerks and surges when shifting into second and third gear. I'm going to clean up my old sensor and try reinstalling and see what happens.

BTW, one of the best cars I ever owned was an 84 Tercel 4WD wagon like the one in the background of the OP's pic. Super dependable little car.

I had a late 80's AWD Cressida... excellent little car until it needed a motor. The AWD block is slightly different than the RWD block and is not interchangeable. Finding an unobtainium motor vs rebuilding the motor for an old undesirable vehicle just didn't pencil out.
