I;m on my second Tundra work truck. One thing I like are the hinges that hold the hood up when open.

So why didn't Toyota put the same type of system on the Tacoma? Some times the hood support gets in the way when working.

I love the Elite's from Redline. I don't think I'd like more opening unless I was 6'3" or taller.

There used to be a standing TW discount on the redline hood struts. I bought them in 2013 and didn’t install them until 2016. Felt like a dope for putting the install off for so long. They are less expensive than retrofitting the Tundra kit as well.

Looks good. Too bad they can't use the factory D&T holes below and slightly forward of where the lower bracket goes.

I'm only 5'10" but I'm going to make the hood as high as I can reasonably reach. I think the taco hood could open more and dang its heavy.

You can pick the high you want it at upon installation, but I guess the extended height is the big draw for Spiker over Redline. I think they're also a bit cheaper.
I'm 6' even and I have it just at the peak of my reach. Best thing is the struts have a super smooth auto-open. I can open and close with just my little finger.

Possibly to hold costs down. The little things add up.
Personally, I'm ok with the prop stick since I probably haven't raised my hood more than 3 or 4 times in 22,000 miles and 21 months I've owned my '18 TRD Sport.

    What's scary about it?
I also have a '96 Tacoma 4x4 with 414,000 trouble-free miles on it. I don't raise a Tacoma hood until it needs to be raised which is very infrequent, to change oil for example.

I open my hood maybe once per year. No sense spending money on shocks for it; I'd rather retire in my 50's

When you get 70 you'll understand why struts are desirable.

I did the redlines recently. I don’t know what it is about them but I love them. I also think the extra opening is gimmicky and silly. I’m 6’ even, with my kings (~2.25” lift), and the stock height, it’s about as far as I could reasonably reach.

I went with Redline struts. Should have come from the factory with them.

I went with the non-drill hood struts and have been pleased so far. I'm on the taller side so I definitely enjoy the extra height they provide. For me, my hood is up multiple times a month. Best of luck with your choice in struts.
