CV axle disassembly problem passenger side....

Hey Folks,
Sorry this is for a 2005 4Runner(guess procedure is more or less same as taco)Had my bearing go, kept driving n got quite wobbly and finally lost acceleration. Today got down to check/change the bearing n hub assembly. The CV axle would not come out hitting with pry bar at the notch, the end is off the knuckle held secure from falling. When i tried pull n turn the CV end it just turns by itself, IS THAT NORMAL. Or did it disconnect from the rest of the axle. I cut the seal (was already open) & just took the end part out for pictures. Thanks in advance.

 

Yikes, no that's definitely not normal lol. I always have to use a pry bar to pop out the CV axle, it's held in by a snap ring and you have to pop it out. Pulling on it won't get it out unless you're lucky and the snap ring is lined up perfectly with the groove inside. A pry bar between the diff and the axle housing is how I pop mine out. Once that snap ring is over the groove it'll slide out easily by hand

 

You pulled it apart. Thats normal because the bearing assembly floats in there to compensate for suspension travel. Now you have to get the other piece out. I like to hammer a cold chisel between the CV and axle housing to pop it loose. Big chis3l to use as a wedge. Once its pops out a little, then you can use your pry bar to pry it out the rest of the way. Pro tip, get the cv dust shield out of the way before doing all of this.

 

The cir-clip has to be pointing down when you hammer on it. Try rotating the axle tulip to various places (12- 3 - 6- 9 o'clock) stopping in each spot to hammer

A slide hammer with 1 hook on the CV and a hose clamp works very well for removal too.

 

Thanks all who helped with inputs, needed lots of patience, a 4lbs hammer, job is done & runs great, New CV axle , New bearing hub assembly.
