Hello from Northern California. Looking to get a used Tacoma. Can't decide what generation to get. I am curious how well the 4X2's hold up compared to 4X4.

Hi My opinion I have owned Three Tacoma Pickups and they all have been 4x2 and they were in nice shape, because they weren't off road vehicles. Not being beat up in the mud and on the dunes. So I would say that was a yes they hold up better than some 4x4's.

Conversely, a Prerunner 4x2 that’s pretending to be an equal truck to the otherwise identical 4x4 may get beat worse trying to keep up on terrain it doesn’t belong in.

A beat truck is a beat truck, period. Most 4x4 trucks and SUVs don’t see a minute of 4x4 use, let alone ripping through mud or dunes.

That reasoning is quite odd when used to form an opinion.

I can see that it can be either case, just from my own experience the 4x2 is less likely to be beat up. I did own a 07 Dodge Diesel for seven years bought it to pull my 37 foot Fifth Wheel and never had it in 4 wheel drive. When I sold it the guy couldn't believe how good of shape it was in. It only had 75,000 miles on it.
