I heard great things about Pittsburgh, was going to grab a set, glad I waited until they can pull the old stock out.

A high quality Chinese made Harbor Freight product failing? I'm completely astounded. Ok, maybe not - at all.

That's scary. It seems something like this should be designed with a failsafe. I have a set of aluminum HF jackstands and the mechanism failed on one of them but it's still able to hold things up. The failure just means that the jackstand needs to be fully extended to it's full height before it can be lowered back to the lowest setting.

Thanks OP, I actually have a set that is under recall.
Works out good because they were to short anyways.

What about those products that came from the same factory, those branded with other names... How to identify those?

I just saw this on reddit and came here to post this as well. A few months back I was trying to figure out which jack stands I should buy for so I could do all of the 100,000 mile maintenance myself, and after reading a couple posts saying “just buy HF stands. They do what they’re supposed to” I said fair enough and bought some. I shuddered a little bit when I saw the recall notice.

This is why I only use Jack Stands that have a safety pin through the mechanism.

Like these. They are not going to fail:

They could fail "under a shift of weight". IOW, some jackass hit his jack stand with a sledge hammer while working on his POS and caused the partially engaged pawl to slip.

Thanks for sharing. I have a pair of 6 tons I use on a regular basis. Item number 56369. So not part of the recall but now I’m definitely worried and wondering if I should get another (better) set from somewhere else. What a terrible product to have a recall ...
