Get a 2012-2015 TRD Off Road if you want a Access Can or a short bed or a TRD Sport if you want a Double Can long bed.

Throw Bilstien 6112 shocks to lift up front and cheap 5100s in the rear.
Wheelers three leaf progressive Add a leaf will be cheaper than a full leaf pack to lift the rear.

Aftermarket off road wheels will have more aggressive backspacing and push your wheels out farther. Don’t use spacers. Choose any wheel you like the look of. FN Wheels are a good balance of cost and quality.

265/75-16 tires if you want your speedo/odo to be correct. 255/85-16 if you want taller 33s that fit will with a small lift. 285s if you want to be like everyone else and care more about looks than function.

Roof rack and bed rack can come after all that as needed. Lots of options.

Don’t waste money until you’re sure you know what’s best for your needs or you’ll end up changing it all out anyway.

Go gradual. Start with finding a truck and researching while you look. THEN worry about modifying it after you’ve driven it for a while and know what your NEEDS are to go along with looks/wants.

Or just be a moron like most people and throw away all of your money for a depreciating asset and never have enough to retire or take care of your family. Your call

I'm a newb, too. For my truck build I bought a 2019 SR5 a couple of months ago because I didn't want to pay a premium and then end up taking off a bunch of OEM parts. I'm budgeting around $4k for a wheels, tires and suspension set-up that should get me close* to your example... in looks only. High-end options can add up quickly. Add another $4-5k (easy) for grill, bumpers, sliders, roof rack, bed rack, etc.

*I'm still naive enough to think that I will be able to avoid the cutting and other crap that goes along with lifting and big tires

There are tons of good threads on here that address the complexities of balancing utility, quality and cost when modding. Good luck!

Buy stock and then slowly turn it into what you want.

that way you know the mods are done right. If you buy it with mods, you risk some one half-assed it

    locker
    MTS / crawl control
    8.75” diff

Don't listen to some advice telling you it's stupid. Cause one can think to put money in something like this is stupid while another thinks wasting money on drinking or smoking or even buying brand clothing is stupid. Just be responsible and besides everyone's financial situation is different.

There are two routes you can go about it:
Buy once, Cry once meaning you put the best stuff on there. This requires a ton of initial capital. You don't need the Pro unless you like the interior and tech package it comes with. TRD Offroad or even the SR5 4x4 will work although the SR5 has a smaller diff and no lockers. However, doesn't Crawl Control but that doesn't work when you really need it unless you are new to offroading and don't know how to get yourself out yet. MTS in Offroad trims is somewhat useful especially due to the delay in throttle response, but if you start messing with gearing, pedal commander, or tune; it kinda makes it inefficient.

The second route is buying stuff as you go along/need (this is what I did). It gets expensive after a while (I am on my third set of suspension). Every time you add or do something and get more experience in offroading, you start replacing it again. Similar to the first option, you can get TRD offroad or SR5 4x4 and just weigh those features. You can always add lockers down the road when you regear.

I'll post a pic of my truck that's recently taken in the shop. As you can see from my rig down below, I didn't have sliders for a while; I recently put it on two weeks ago one of the reason why it was in the shop, the other reason was suspension and regearing. However, I don't rock crawl; I do mountain passes at 30+mph and "Overlanding"/camping. Your type of adventure doesn't always fit with what the other person has. 285s are necessary for me since I live in Louisiana where it's deep swampy mud where skinny tires can't dig through (wish I can get skinny and tall, I like that look better). Literally will get wetter/softer as you dig. People think just cause they have one thing and that is what's good in their area, it's the same for the rest. It's your taco, your adventure, don't let people dictate what you do {end rant}.

Your answer can be anywhere from 3k to 20k depending on the quality of suspension you’re looking for.
Are you off roading and going to remote locations or are you just trying to look cool?

The 2 most important things you will need is a lot of research and a shit ton of $$$$. Welcome to TW go with what you like ignore most advice unless it relates to how something mechanically operates.

I would keep the 3rd gen stock and mod the ‘01.
Do you want a 4x4? Are you going to off-road?

I'm in the boat of buy stock and modify as you need it or where the truck falls short. Yes that truck looks cool going down a trail, but how much of that would you actually use?

This is for off road. My 01 has taken me everywhere stock- incredible truck. The 2020 is for off road as well, with a family friendly comfort style.

I'll play devil's advocate here. a) do you even need a truck b) do you need any of the $15000 worth of mod's on that truck (i.e. do you plan on camping, overlanding, off roading, etc.) or are you just looking for that mall status?

    And welcome.

No, I hear ya. I don't need all of that, I just want the rugged suspension with those wheels. I live in the mountains so it will be put to use.

Intersting perspective. I do plan on modding my 01 but that will be the one strictly for cool looks. The 3rd gen is
for family camping trips and off roading, and serve as the wife's soccer mom vehicle during the winter months in the snow.
