I'm trying to power a 12v fridge, could I wire up a charge controller to a single battery? My thought is to get an AGM with a 100w panel mounted to the roof in hopes that will be sufficient to run the fridge nearly indefinitely. Is this possible?

It’s possible but probably overkill. If all you’re looking to run is a fridge, a good battery will do that for a few days no problem.

Should I be concerned with an agm battery not being properly charged by the alternator? I was thinking that rather than spending $75-$100 for a charger to keep the AGM happy I may as well spend the extra $ for solar and hopefully never have to worry about power.

Its possible and a good setup if you get a good sized AGM battery. I ran this setup with a 31M northstar in the stock location. Had no issues with charging and running a 50qt fridge but it is my daily driver so having the alternator help with the charging really helps vs a standalone system. I ran the same setup standalone with a 31M and it was much better once i wired it up as the main battery

Great, sounds like I'll try just the battery and see how it works out. If I feel the need to add the panel in the future at least I know I can hook it up without issue.

    Thanks guys

I have a domestic 12v fridge and wanted it to run on solar. I used the Dometic PLB40 as my battery because I got a good deal and I can plug the solar straight into the battery. The PLB40 is a charge controller, battery and DC inverter in one. I also got it on REI when they had 20% off one item. I'm sure there are other deals just like that.

I've looked at the PLB40 but I can't justify the price. Maybe in a couple years prices will come down. It does seem like a great solution though.
