6 months ago, I noticed a HUGE sudden drop in power and mpg in my 2008 Tacoma V6

At first I started with the common things like: Spark Plugs, MAF sensor, tire pressure, air filter, Ignition coil test, absolutely no difference!

I decided to take it in to get it looked at by a shop, I did research and found some Toyota savvy mechanics in my area, 1st shop couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary and said truck looked greatly maintained

Now here is where the story gets interesting, I take it to the 2nd shop-(Great reviews on TW about this mechanic) He takes a look at it, calls me back and says “out of his 35 years working on Toyota’s he’s never seen anything like it”

Cylinder 6 is misfiring, not constantly- but twice every 500 seconds. (Picture attached)

I find this extremely odd that the misfire isn’t triggering the check engine light, and when you do the “tick test” on coil #6 IT TICKS?
If the coil was bad it wouldn’t tick at all!

I really really love this truck but I just don’t know how much more of this I can take. I’m spending $400/month in gas. I can’t go more than 240 miles on 21.1 gallons of fuel, I used to go 300-340 all day long back in the day.

I would really appreciate any Tacoma patrons that can give me a little insight on what they would try or any recommendations.

I’m thinking maybe the dealer next.

Just curious, Did the two shops charge you when they failed to diagnose the problem?

Is that two every 500 seconds? That’s twice in 8 min 20 seconds. That’s not your mileage issue.

Twice in 500 milliseconds may be an issue.

@rnish Yeah the snap on scanner reads it in seconds, kinda weird.

Not seeing much from the image as it is only showing about 380 milliseconds... and only one firing pulse.

Jack on wheel up at a time, see if wheel turns freely. Our old 4runner had dragging calipers/brakes...

If it’s a misfire every 8 minutes then that wouldn’t affect your mileage at all.

Just wondering if coil packs were switched, as mentioned in your previous thread.

Did they do a compression test? How does the plug look? I would also have looked at the fuel trims on the OBD. Is the truck running at temperature (not too cool)?
