Mirror backup camera in aftermarket headunit

My 2011 TRD OR came with rear camera that displays in the mirror. I have an aftermarket headunit (

$280 Alpine ILX-W650 Digital Multimedia Receiver with CarPlay and Android Auto Compatibility

Alpine ILX-W650) that I haven't successfully been able to get the rear camera to output to. Anyone know how to do this? Also, is it possible to make it so I can display it anytime, and not just when I'm in reverse??

 

When I installed my Jensen in my 2010 TRD Sport I just ordered a License Plate Backup Cam from Crutchfield so No I have have both. You should be able to install a switch in aftermarket wiring to get a least cam in the head unit anytime. Look at manual and wire diagram for the reverse sensor wire might be possible there. Good luck. Buying the after market one was just simpler.

 

You need to tap into your camera harness . And if you want it to come on at any time you need to supply the camera a seperated 12v source

 

Idk if you had a fix to this but I have the similar issue. The video lower in this thread worked, but I probably messed up somewhere as it displayed on my head unit distorted. I'm currently trying to find a way to redirect the output from the mirror to just the head unit. Once you connect the camera you can display it at anytime from the options in the alpine screen

 

My 2011 mirror cam is horrible, never would I put that on my Joying. I have joying ahd rev cam and pic is amazing, nigh-time is bright as day. Super easy install. Haven’t tried to abc yet

 

I have the same stereo. To get mine to work on my 2018, there was a Crux Harness on crutchfield. It took the output from the camera and turned it into a yellow rca, which I could just plug into the head unit. That being said, your camera’s output wouldn’t run to the stereo at all I wouldn’t think. Unless you can find a harness that will somehow convert it somewhere, I would find an aftermarket camera that fits in the stock location, that either outputs to a yellow RCA to plug into your stereo.

I can’t see mine on demand, it might be because the camera might not be powered unless the reverse trigger wire sends power to it, or if it triggers a power wire sent to it. In that case, if you find an aftermarket one that is powered when the truck is on or if you can find one where you can trigger it with one of your amp turn on leads, that might allow you to see it whenever you want. Some others on here may be able to verify whether or not the camera has power to it all the all the time or not, but I’m betting that it doesn’t unless in reverse. Just some ideas.

Which joying do you have? Do you like it? I'm over this Alpine. It's pretty meh, and Android auto doesn't even work in it anymore, and to be honest, I didn't care for it, even when it did work.

 

As noted above, install another cam for the head unit. Gives you redundancy and a different view. Another benefit is that you can leave a little excess cable in the back tucked under the license plate and have alternate mounts depending on whether you have bike racks, spare tire racks, trailers (with an extension cable) or whatever. Make up some GoPro mount points and clip the cam to wherever you need it whenever.

Edit: BTW I am using an Alpine cam with my Pioneer head unit. I tried an Amazon cheap Chinese offering but it started leaking in a couple of months. The Alpine cam has been perfect for several years now.

 

8” with buttons, it looks to good to not love it. The Bluetooth mic doesn’t work so great for me, didnt try the external mic yet, I just turn off Bluetooth.

I installed GY6.35 OSRAM bulbs for the reverse lights and the Joying ahd rev camera and can’t believe how bright and perfect the pic is. Don’t have to lower the tinted windows to see at night now.

Alpine iLX-W650) when I manually switch the camera ob from the menu. I even cut the factory wires and spliced my stripped RCA directly to the bare and red from the harness with no luck. Any suggestions?
