Funny you should say that. Look at the picture below. That's my truck. After the incident in question, the centre part of my bumper was hanging on by zip ties only. So I had BWG make me that piece. The remaining damage is small cracks to the right side of my bumper, that is hard to spot until you get down low. So I'm living with it for now.

@gnewman545 I wasn't going to post this on here but your story was similar so I figured I would anyway: Last Nov 16 I went out for a run with a buddy who hadn't gone offroading with me in the tacoma. Anyway, it was my birthday, it was like 10pm at night and it had been -5 the night before and barely above zero all day... I took him down my favorite mudhole trail, broke through about 1.5 inches of ice and fell into the 24 inches or so of water below... but of course I didn't stop, I decided to push through to the other side of the hole which forced the ice through the front of my truck and also ran down the side:

Smashed the front end pretty bad, and bent the brackets for my CaliRaised LED 32" light bar...

and also did a number on the passenger side:

    Sigh...

I was smart enough to call it a night there but that was a $7k lesson I didn't need... goes in to get fixed next week actually.

I was pretty sure the bridge would hold our trucks but it was narrow like you said and my buddy was in the lead and these being our daily driver trucks he flat out refused to even try the bridge and I wasn't backing a few kms out just to go back in and try it so we gave up that day. If I had been leading I prob would have given'er across the bridge and kept going...

So I went out with my buddy and explored the Bowater trails on Saturday (I would have invited everyone on here but it was a sort of sudden thing with no notice so I couldn't) and wow, those trails go and go but we couldn't find a way to get the trucks around the south end of Panuke lake so we could try and come out in Windsor or elsewhere... has anyone ever driven these trails and managed to get from the East side of Panuke lake to the West side, I would love a GPS track of a trail that would allow me to do this! Anyway, there were soooo many people in there but also lot of really nice campsites and a lot of trails siutable for wheelers/bikes and sxs's but the truck trails were basically just non maintained old dirt logging roads, not very exciting, but def a nice spot to go. I'm thinking I need to take the sxs and wheeler up there some weekend and explore some more.

Was there a post about this very area a page or two ago? For some reason I am sure Mitch said he'd been through there, Duncan I think you said you had been in that area too, yes?

I'd just as soon have it fixed like it was never there... Will be done by the middle of June.

Bowater is a nice place to go, it where @Canoehead and I typically head off to
the majority of it does seem to be dirt roads, but there's a few hidden jems around

This little hill was pretty fun, a bit pin-stripey to get to, but nice once we got there.
I beleive @TacoMitch93 showed it to @Canoehead who showed it to me.

Need to upgrade suspension for better towing (long story). Can anyone recommend a reliable shop as I don't trust myself to do it properly?
    Thanks

Location? I would think any big tire shop would be able to do it, given they do alignments, I had Valley Tire in Kentville do mine, but again, big tire shop and they've been doing lifts for decades

As promised, here is your chuckle for the weekend.

on Wednesday I decided to go to Conrad's quarry where I keep my pop-up camper. I wanted to take the tarp off it, give it a quick inspection since I want to go camping soon. on the way back I remembered there was this little off shoot I wanted to explore. I had my 5yr old son with me who was happily sitting in the back seat.

    so I arrived here.....
    upload_2020-6-12_10-27-35.jpg

and proceeded to go off on that trail to the upper right, at first it was fine, some garbage piles on the left and right.... "ok" i thought to myself, still pretty wide and easy peasy" then I seen this rock, big guy, too big to go over, and seems like just enough room to go around, Plus I had sliders so I figured I was covered! well I was, no rub, just a little tight. I wasn't looking far enough ahead of the rock to notice how tight the trail got. Well it was too late, I figured that even though it looked "tight" the truck had a few scratches on it already so no biggie, I'll find a place to turn around and head out, this was not what I expected. within 100 ft I find a place I *could* turn around in, but I also see some daylight about another 100 ft ahead of that. having the mirrors already get folded back by trees I hopped out and did a pre-inspection walk, yup it was a nice little spot I could turn around in, but it also had a direct path straight out!! sure it was about as tight as the previous stuff, but going forward seemed easier and quicker then going back. There was only one minor probem. there was a little hump at the very end. at first it did not look too big, but the other side was "taller" then the approach. I reminded myself that the truck is "taller" then I always think it is even though its still stock in the wheels / suspension department. so off I go, past the 1st place I could turn around in, and past the 2nd. upon the approach to the little hill it was a bit muddy, but no biggie the truck was fine for traction.

Up goes the front of the truck, then it comes down, i'm past the 1/2 mark when I stopped and the wheels spun.... "un-oh...." I thought.

did the usual, tried to back up nope.
    tried to go forward nope
turned wheels side to side while going forward and back nope!

she was high centered right some good
    sIeWE1SQlBpDhjzfGtwgPzuQXWC0TEk0uDp8tzAU_cac8a6c58520884cc59b0bc48443c7cda410f8f1.jpg

The pictures don't do it justice. But it was resting on the frame / sliders. so much that the rear suspension was pretty much just hanging there.

I've seen enough 4WD Action youtubes to know that I needed to do some "Track building"
I scrounged around and found some 2x4's in the back of the truck, and some sticks and logs and branches. stuffed them under the tires best I could but it all was a failure.

no choice now but to text my wife ( didden't tell her where I was going, we left while she was putting my youngest down for a nap )

".....Just taking Ethan for a little drive......" <send>

ok now that my bases are covered, I need to call in the big guns!

    @TacoMitch93 to the rescue!

( see how close I was to the end!!!)
a big tow strap, some shackles and a little tug later I was free.

Here's a shot of where I came from, Just a little scratchy...
    BknuSv6lXgQQY1pGa2pGl5qzqaUGCDslA5-izc6B_0fecb10f9e676b2983d5fac47ca6a02ca9e05210.jpg

here's the carnage I left behind me. The hill is a little "flatter now"
    qZo2iWS3YnMjb3FV9LF87M3QmQousfz_YlURSc9x_b2e9216caeaf8455a2e96717f798eda4f527c621.jpg

The sliders protected the frame rails ( bolt on sliders that go under the frame ) and the rear bumper took the rest of the damage ( factory bumper ) no dents in the bumper, it just acted like a scoop pulling dirt down. Oh and the Hitch was full of dirt too.

If I'd been more prepared I would of had my knock off maxx tracks, and I think they would have helped out quite a bit, if not gotten me free. rear passenger tire was pretty much un-weighted, and rear driver did not have much weight. The mud that my front tires was in was really slippery too, I jammed the new 2x4's under the front but I just spun on them.

I did air down ( after the fact ) and while it did have an effect, it wasn't enough
I clearly ran out of talent on this one :D ( or brains... IDK... )

Thanks @TacoMitch93 for pulling me out

and thanks @Canoehead for the rapid tire deflator, it worked great, I think I aired down all 4 tires in about 2 min. it was really fast!

for more tomfoolery come back after lunch and you can read about my battle with the tire valve stems ( dang TPMS!! )

Glad everything worked out ok with that @D2. If it makes you feel any better I would have thought that bit would have been nothing myself, and also being on stock tires/suspension, would have ended up in the same boat... Glad you got out ok though!

I posted pics of my truck a bit ago and I just got her back so here's the before pics again but this time with the after as well. I must say I'm glad she's looking pretty again :)

nice upgrade on the grill @Tertius420 !! that looks sharp.

I think it was the down slope that got me, it was definitely pointed down. Ah well, Live and learn eh?

so earlier last week, and into this week I've been fighting my valve stems. I had the original 10yr old TMPS sensors with the aluminum valve stems.
so last year I thought it would be a great idea to put on metal valve stem caps on them. the winter happened, then spring and over time they corroded together. I did not know this was a "thing" never having aluminum stems before. so when I could not get the caps off with my fingers, I added some penetrating oil, and a wee bit of heat to free things up, grabbed some pliers and proceeded to turn back and forth to try and free it up.

All because I found the lovely Christmas Present @Canoehead gave me and wanted to try it out ( rapid tire deflator ). Well I'm glad I did this at home with no where to go.......

    ACtC-3eU5QvDY4D11U1U5bFyLoxEZNZXy7-AA2y3_eda6e801aaf79c047df470f5f45e4d3bff947643.jpg
I snapped the tip of the stem right off, and took the core with it.
    talk about rapid deflation!

after some interweb searching, I decided to do this myself, as practice in case it happened on the trail.
turns out the thread on valves is an odd ball thread, and no nuts will fit on it. I wanted to weld up a tool to mimic the professional tools I was seeing on the internet. then I stumbled upon the redneck way.

What you need is metal valve caps ( yes, metal. the same thing that got me into this mess ) and drill out the middle and insert a nail or screw into it. I chose a nail since it fit perfectly after grinding away a wee bit of the edge of the head. ( ignore the box of nuts, different project )
    ACtC-3cTkTGCRJO8Xho6jYdhEL8aCCsU3f12b6wR_e9940ad2cdf79cc45e371a83c921ed29019259de.jpg

screw the nail and cap on to the stem, and Volia! you now have a cheap install tool.

    ACtC-3fxmWtttWNsQVvNjaTxtepQFsNPk2O5aaSh_4c25177ac6b88b9f5c45ab85b1dcc2f268144de7.jpg
just lube up the stem with dish soap, insert the whole thing from the backside so the nail is pokeing out, grip the nail with pliers and pull. Not much force is needed, and they will pop right in! Easy peasy.

now for the hard part... breaking the bead on the tire.
I've seen some pictures and videos on how to do this at home and there's lots of ways to do this. By no means am I condoning this method, or telling others its safe, because its not safe! but this is what I did with the tools I had on hand.

I put a scissor jack between the tuck and the tire and used the weight of the truck to break the bead.
The sliders really helped here, but in a pinch, you could use your frame, or hitch.
    ACtC-3eQC-gkmRdGPLdiZgKjDOrExPWZpnYup5YC_99c282f0f79017d729f4f3b563f6be201a40e03c.jpg
I had to work it a bit, stand on the tire close to the jack and bounce a bit. all of this is dangerous, the jack could slip, my toes could have some how slid in between the rim and tire and the jack falls out.... you get the idea. I did have my steel toes on so I felt comfortable with the whole thing, but there's a lot of force here. Moving on.

finally I got it broken away to the point I could reach the TPMS sensor.

the fun did not end there, the outer housing of the stem was welded to the inner part ( they screw together to make a snug fit on the rim ) so I had to mess with that, then the sensor was stuck to the rim and I had to use a punch on the stem to drive it out. Yup each one of the stems fought me the whole way, but in the end I replaced each one with a standard rubber one.

    Summary by Tire
    1) not too bad, everything worked OK, gave me confidence to do the rest.
    2) this one was a bugger, cap and valve broke off again, then the outer housing that screws tight to the rim stripped, so in the end I used a stubby hack saw to cut the stem almost flush with the rim and use a punch again. ( I tried heat before she stripped, but no luck )
    3) instead of cutting it off, I grabbed a chisel and gave it a few good wacks, broke off flush with the rim ( score!! ) but the :censored: TPMS sensor Broke of and was now bouncing round inside the tire. That took an hour to fish out....
    4) bead on this bugger would not seperate, took a long time but I got it. stem stripped, TPMS fell off ( thank goodness I left everything alone until I had the bead broken, and ended up using a punch to drive it out )

would I do it again? probally not. I'm not entirely sure it's worth my time considering I probally could of had a tire shop do the same thing for the price of un-mounting the tires. I'm glad I did do it. I know what to do on the trail. I now have the install "tool" in my glove box with 4 spare valves in case they are ever needed again.

oh, and Princess Auto sells a decent looking install tool for $8, found it AFTER I had finished all my tires...

I must say, i'm not a fan of how my sensors aged.
from the pic below you can see what's in play here

you have the sensor ( which every single one of my sensors has cracked plastic where the aluminum stem meets the sensor, just waiting to fall off.
there's the rubber o-ring that seals the aluminum stem to the inside of the rim. There's the aluminum outer "cap" that has the nut head, 3/4 of mine were seized on there pretty good. And there's the part about me being a good and putting on some metal caps that started this whole thing.
I never heard that before, but one quick google search showed me it happens all too often.

    Bonus info:
those goofy caps I had on there are actually valve core removers, stick the pointy end into your stem and you can remove valve cores. I figured it would be handy on the trail in case some one lost a core, or perhaps assisting in airing down my tires. The evil side of me called them "the great equalizer" I had dreams of some one cutting me off, only to park at the same destination I was going to, so I would then remove all 4 of their cores, tape them to their window with a note that said ".... you might need these to get home..."

I guess my evil days are behind me.
its plastic caps from here on out

hope you enjoyed my frustration. Its been an eventful few weeks with the truck.

Damn TPMS. I just refused to screw with it and built a TPMS canister.
