4.88 with 265/75r16 too low?

    Anybody have first hand experience running 4.88 gearing with 265/75/16?

    I want to keep my tires relatively light and keep it under 33”. I like the 255/85s but I don’t like the very limited options which all seem fairly heavy.

    I’m leaning towards 265/75 DuraTrac in load C (45lbs) But I’m worried I might be geared too low. I’m also considering moving to a 17” wheel for more tire options though I prefer the 16” for more sidewall.

    check the Mega4.88 thread. Most regearing due to larger tires and added weight of off road mods, but not all. Some, like me, sticking with stock 265's on their daily driver. Nothing saying you can not. Good choice regardless.

    You'll barely notice a difference with that size tire. Save you money, absolutely no need to regear until you get into much larger tire sizes.

    some regear for towing purposes. Makes all the difference - even with stock tires.

    Sorry, but does this mean you're already geared 4.88? If so, skip the 265/75 and go straight to 285/75/16.

    Thanks for the responses.

    Yes, I already geared at 4.88. I prefer a truck with lowering gearing for several reasons including ability to run a little larger tire.

    With 4.88 and stock tire (265/70) it’s better than the stock gearing in my opinion and I’m actually using 6th on the freeway which was pretty rare before the regear.

    But I do want to run a taller tire. 285/75 are a little heavier and wider than what I’d like. I wish there were more 255/85/16 options. Moving to a 17” (prefer 16) wheel opens up more options like the 255/75 which seems like a good choice.
    Any suggestions for a tire that’s around 32-33” and under 45lbs?

    If you are towing so much that you need a re-gear, then it's time consider a full size or a 3/4-1 ton truck.

    only tow my 1500 lb tent camper a couple times each month of the summer. Tacoma meets my needs and the gears made it even better. Like the Tundra but it is too big and overkill for my need. Pretty sure some followed your advice.

    I am running 265/75/16 and just ordered some Yukon 4:88 gears.

    have added about 300-350 lbs to truck.
