First time in my 16 years of ownership that I am starting to run into OEM parts showing up as discontinued. Toyota has provided incredible parts support (other manufacturers start discontinuing parts the moment the DOT will let them, I believe 7 or 8 years). Is anyone else seeing this, too?

You can still get parts for 80's trucks. So they aren't discontinuing anything as a blanket policy, but it's totally plausible they're discontinuing support for the stuff they never sell.

It would be ABSOLUTELY STUPID for them to do so.

Their trucks are their bread winners. They are designed to be the backbone and workhorses of everything from landscaping companies to terrorist organizations around the globe.

Lots stay continued, especially the Prado shared items.

Stuff like interior panels and radios you really need to cut them some slack.

    Yeah.... not really.

The top selling Toyotas are pretty consistently the Camry and the Corolla, and in 2019, the RAV4 outsold the Tacoma, too.

In 2004, The Tacoma ranked behind the Sienna, and (surprise) the Corolla and Camry.

    https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/us-best-selling-cars-2004/

It's not stupid, it's business. It would be stupid to continue stocking things on shelves that never sell - that's how you go out of business.

we can only hope that there are enough aftermarket suppliers willing to continue to make parts!

Yeah clearly your perspective is in the little picture. Those statistics are based purely off of US sales. I'm talking big picture, globally, 88 pick up trucks... All the trucks that are still out and about running around, not just here in the states. I mean everywhere... overseas stuff like that.

No one gives a damn about 2019 or 2020 Tacomas for that matter. That's why they get outsold to Camrys and RAV4s.

I don't want to derail this thread so I'll let OP have his thing now.

A lot of the interior components have been discontinued. ebay and junk yards are the only option for some pieces.

Even globally Toyota sells way more cars than trucks. In 2018 for example, Toyota sold a combined 2.3 million Corollas, Camrys and Rav4s. They sold ~750k worth of Hiluxes, Tacos, and Tundras. Trucks are just more expensive to operate than a Corolla, that's why they don't sell as many IMO.

Parts availability would be less of an issue if Toyota didn't create separate truck models for North America. We'd have access to a whole world of aftermarket parts. I'm surprised they haven't merged the Hilux and Tacoma platform more. I wish they would bring the 70 series here, but Toyota probably rightly assumes that Americans won't pay 50k in 2020 for an interior that looks like this.

I mean I would, but I am probably a very small minority. I like the simplicity and it looks like it will work/last forever! I am not a fan at all of over the top gadgets shoved in my face. Why do I need to go through a touchscreen menu to adjust my temperature when the knob works just fine? The new Tacoma looks pretty nice and all but I would absolutely love my 1st gen dash in a new truck. Easy to use and simple with fun mechanical knobs to touch.

As a side note, I am in my early 20's and just about finished with a degree in software engineering, so I am in no way scared/disconnected from technology. I just feel like sometimes I need a break from staring at computer screens all day, and when I have to stare at one in my car too it gets old...

I might be wrong though I recall when I started driving in about 90-91 that manufactures had to make parts for 20 years. This could have been just domestic mfg’s, cause all my parents had owned where American and it was easy getting parts for our old 60’s mustangs and 53 dodge truck.

It is all business I hear people cry about parts going obsolete after 5 years in the things I deal with

Storage space is limited sure one can for the most can get more but one needs to draw the line

The newer parts are going to push the older parts out .

Then the money is always a factor how much can you tie up just sitting on a shelf .

It is always the trim pieces and interior parts then sheet metal that goes obsolete first.

I have had far better luck getting older parts from Toyota then the Domestic manufacturers .
most times the Ford and Chevy dealers laugh.

There are Tacoma enthusiasts who would pay 50k for a functional hood scoop. Why do Americans want their automotive interiors to rival that of a five star hotel?
Looks like inflation and luxury go hand in hand.

What makes the 70 series more expensive than a Tacoma or 4runner?

The diesel V8... which isn't emissions compliant in the US. Then again the entire 70 series can't meet US crash safety and rollover stability requirements (VSC performance tested at GVWR), so it's an academic discussion.

Academic discussions are fun. So they could slap the v6 from the Tacoma in it and be emissions compliant. Also all of the NA cars pass crash safety without costing more. I’m just confused why a vehicle with less safety features and less emissions equipment and cheaper interior would cost more. Maybe it’s the diesel, but I thought there were other engine options over there too.

EDIT: I do know that other countries pay more for the same exact thing we get. Americans are cheap asses compared to other countries. So maybe that’s some of it too the profits are probably higher in Australia just because they are willing to shell out more money for the same product.

I think the 70 series costs more than a Tacoma or 4Runner because it's a true ute, that offers more offroad utility than a Tacoma or 4Runner.
