I like the built-in pressurization piece, but at nearly $300 for what it is, nah...

The scepter 5gal water jerry can (or similar) is military approved. You can get them for around $50. they can be a bit difficult to find in the US as they are sold to the military.

That's actually kind of neat. It purifies the water so you can drink puddle water without boiling.

Lots of alternatives that are less expensive. But, nice to have as say an emergency drinking water system. I wonder how it does on salt water.

If you want to carry them in your bed I bought two of these. They work great! www.tacojerry.com

Just think of the overlanding cred that thing conveys- definitely worth it! :boink:

I think I'll stick to the $80 filter and $20 water can I already have.

    Still in planning phase ...
Neat piece of gear, but I still have Hiker Microfilter and MSR MIOX and three 7 gal. cans, think I will stick with them until they all fall apart.

Mine are all filters, not purifiers but I've never had any issues. I've got a Pur Hiker and a Pur Hiker Pro (now Katadyn; incidentally their website is a dumpster fire) and two old Pur Explorers; I bought one of the Hikers and a handful of filters for both models when a local place went out of business and my brother gave me his Explorer when he switched to something else (I can't remember what he's using off the top of my head, I want to say an MSR). Four filters is a bit excessive but it gets worse, I've got a Sawyer in-line, a Aquimira Frontier filter and I keep a couple of Katadyn Micropur tablets in each bag. :anonymous: I've got a distillation setup with condensing coil that I made somewhere as well.

My water jugs are old like my filters (probably have BPAs) but still work so I haven't bothered to replace them- a pair of older Coleman water cubes and a Rubbermaid Jerry can style that is, IIRC, six gallons. While I like the cubes because they're stable in use, they do take up more area. If I were buying new jugs today I'd buy the Scepter military cans; if I were buying a filter I'd probably get another Hiker Pro.

A lot of my gear is older and worn but I tend to take care of my stuff so it last. I've got newer stuff as well, I just pick and chose what I like and for different applications. I really ought to start selling or donating stuff, my storage room looks like a crazy outdoor consignment shop with all sorts of outdoor gear of various vintages, a lot of which I haven't used in years and I'll never use again. :help:

it won’t work for salt water. Filtration and desalinization are two totally different things.

Kind of, most small desalinators use a membrane system (a type of filter), you can buy desalinators units but they're expensive. A small, hand pump model made by say Katadyn is around $1200 to 2200 (ex. https://www.seatechmarineproducts.com/katadyn-survivor-06-watermaker-8013419.html and https://www.seatechmarineproducts.com/katadyn-survivor-35-watermaker-8019948.html). You can find them at boating/marine stores from the small hand pumps up to large engine powered units. They're not really practical unless you are a blue water sailor and will actually need one (note the ones above are hand pump models and rated at 30oz/hr and 1.2gal/hr respectively- that's a lot of pumping and it gets harder to push water through the membrane the more you use them). A much easier and cheaper way to desalinate water is to distill it. Here's a video someone did on how to make a simple unit; the one I built years ago is essentially the same thing.

I just bought a berkey filter
For home use but the black filter they make is amazing I will try to rig that to my katydyne gravity filter when it gets old.

I have a couple of kiddie pools, tarps and some tubing stored in buckets. So yea, I could drink my own urine.
