It's not the lowest price I've seen it either. If you want an ar, but don't want to build one and are just looking for a quality off the shelf. That ain't bad...

Would front sight be in the way to use a red dot?

You would probably see it when you look throught the red dot, but won't know for sure if it's in the way until you mount it up and look through it. I guess the short answer is maybe.

This is exactly mine when I bought it, minus accessories.

Want to off one of the fan boys who have to have a 2000 plus rifle?

Take your 700 dollar rifle and out shoot them at 450 yds.

    Its fun.

    Good rifle.
    Not the cheapest
    Not the worst
    Not the best
    Not the most expensive rifle.

Direct answer is yes without a large offset block, which is now difficult to use.

You can either run a red dot that co-witnesses fully (all aligned) with the iron sights or you can run lower 1/3 co-witness where the iron sights are just below the red dot.

I prefer lower 1/3 due to less visual distraction/noise.

Or just do what I did. Cut off the front sight and file down leaving only the gas block portion left. Works like a charm. Lol

Can't go wrong with that! Not a bad price with an optic. IMHO, shoot it as is and get comfortable with it before the modding starts. The only thing I can think of that helps a lot is a 2 point sling. Get a front and rear QD sling mounts and a nice sling. This is what I went with but I don't think paid this much 6 years ago when I bought it.

I ran a very similar setup for my first AR. A red dot that's setup for AR use doesn't feel as cluttered as you'd thing when you go to actually shoot targets. Went bang, was cheap, let me figure out what features I wanted and needed from the rifle so when I upgraded things made sense. That rifle will be a perfectly acceptable musket for any and all mainline tasks you could ask of an AR.

Edit: read further, you made a similarly good choice.

I’m gonna teach mom how to use an AR tonight, she has a few pistols that she’s knows how to use but I would feel a lot better if she knew how to use a rifle if people choose to make poor decisions and attempt to enter the house.
Any tips/tricks? I’ve taught my sister how to use an AR (I myself am proficient, not great but good enough) but she’s a little bit more mechanically inclined than my mom.

We have a female only gun training/store locally. Pretty cool concept. I sent my wife there to learn how to use our Glock. Might send her again for the newly purchased AR. It was a great experience for her. $135 for a 4 hour class and she got CC certified. No pressure or judgement. Or me being frustrated....

maybe you have something similar in your area?

Awesome that you're teaching her. I taught a GF years ago. I would recommend teaching/reviewing the fundamentals of safety and then just stick with the basics. I used 5 round mags initially. Keeps things simple and fun and be patient.

We do actually, we have a semi-local wife of a cop that puts on training classes mainly for women, I’m not sure of her qualifications but I stumbled across her Facebook page a few weeks ago, I’ll look into it, thanks!

I did review the fundamentals with her, she learned them in her concealed carry course and remembered them quite well, for now I taught her the basics of how it works, how to load it, where the safety is, and how to unload it, no live fire yet but next time we’re out at the property I’ll have her practice a little and become familiar with it.
