Anyone coming from a V8 4Runner?

I have had a 2007 4Runner V8 for the last six years, bought at 50k and currently has 190k! Also currently have 2019 crosstrek that. Thinking about trading in the Subaru and selling the 4Runner and go out and get a new Tacoma. Are the new Tacoma’s really that bad? I know it won’t have the low end punch of the 4Runner! Any one that made switch have any regrets?

No, they are great trucks. The earlier year models (16-18) had issues with shifting and throttle response but those issues have been resolved the 2020s.

I came from a 2006 V8 4Runner myself and Im very happy with my Tacoma. While the Tacoma doesn't have near the smoothness or low end torque of the 4.7, its a decent set up for what it is. That is all subjective though, just take one for a test drive.

I had a 2004 V8 4Runner and I traded for my 17’ Tacoma. I have been very happy with my truck! It’s interesting to hear all the whining on here about various issues with the Tacoma, but the only problem I’ve had is the a/c cutting out on very hot days. That is supposed to have been taken care of by a TSB, but I haven’t taken it in yet for that issue. I love the way it drives, very similar to the 4Runner, except for the hyperactive transmission, but even that has gotten better. I did get the transmission TSB done.

How is the A/C? It’s terrible in the Subaru that’s big reason why i’m ready to dump it before summer hits!

The AC isn’t all that great. Out of 10 I would give it a 6.5 It doesn’t get ice cold. Just cold enough. If I was in your position. I would wait another five years for the new Tacoma then sell both cars.

I like my a/c, but I’m going to get that TSB done because I like to carry my dogs around with me and they need that cool air, especially if I have stop when I’m out shopping. I’ve seen the temperature gauge on my display hit 120 after stoping for a luncheon.

I came from a gen1 tundra with the 4.7 engine. That was a sweet motor but always hungry. As far as the 2020 tacoma, in was a bit disappointed initially compared to what i just came from. The tacoma started out with a quirky transmission, but that all got much better after 1500 miles, plus the entire truck seemed to loosen up, and make more power. Believe me the tacoma isn't perfect still, with its initial lack of low end torque, crappy ride compliance, and narrower bed, but it does get much better fuel economy than the 4.7. On the other hand if toyota built another gen1 tundra sized tundra truck with a more fuel efficient 4.7, i'd buy one in a heartbeat.

In my opinion the power difference is noticeable but not life changing. Go into it expecting the same power and you will be disappointed. Go into thinking of it as a v6 truck and you will be fine.

I know it's not quite what you're asking but I came from and 07 5.3 Silverado. They make very similar power to weight, although the power is delivered differently I wasn't disappointed in the Taco's power. FWIW I'm on 285/70/17 with stock 4.30 gears and still have plenty of passing power and can drive up I-70 into the Colorado hills just fine. Can't speak for the slush box but the manual does fine.

As far as passing power, my v6 taco definitely has more pop from 50 mph up than my 4.7 tundra did. The v6 is not slow there by any means.

    Stawk as FUCK!
Keep the V8 4Runner. Sell the other car. I promise. My cousin has the same 4Runner V8 model but a little done up som' and it's bitching! He runs 37's on it lol. It's only 2WD and it still goes everywhere due to driver mod.

The 4.7 V8 4Runner is one of the best combos Toyota ever had. Especially if you desire to add any armor.

The current Tacoma lacks the low end punch of the current 4Runner, which has no low end punch.

The current 4Runner has its power band at high RPM's. The Tacoma even more so. Both have enough power stock, but the Tacoma has a much different feel. Go take a long test drive to make sure you like it.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
We still have it. Just did a full frame-off restore of it. If there was a way to swap that engine into the Tacoma I would do it!

My understanding is that all V8 4Runners are all full time 4x4 with Lo or Hi settings.

That being said I will NEVER sell mine. I have a Tacoma TRD OR, a V8 4Runner, and a Camaro SS/RS. I'm single with no kids so I spoil myself.

V8 4runner is amazing. Just be prepared to shred tires with the all time 4wd. Guy at a gas station informed me this and the MPG was a major downside. He was armored, lifted, and bigger tires but was looking to do the same trade since his daughters are now grown. He seemed to be "done" with it.

    There is a 2wd only V8 4runner. The 4wd version is FT-4WD (no 2wd mode like the V6).

My brother had an 05 4.7 4runner. Boy did that thing eat tires. Finally sold it...was sick of replacing tires every 20-25k miles. Said the gas it was chewing up was bad enough.

Keep the V8 4 Runner. More simplistic, more reliable, more better. You’ll thank me later.

I never had any problem with mine eating tires! It was a great SUV! I wish that I had kept it.
