    Hello TacomaWorld,

I'm contemplating on selling my Tacoma and wanted to ask you all on what you think a fair price is for it since it's a unique truck. The truck details, history, modifications, and photos will all be below. If you have time to read let me know what you think in the comments.

    History

This truck used to belong to someone I know who bought the truck back in October of 2015, they had it for years and took well care of it while also modifying it along the way, all bolt-on stuff really but high-quality parts from companies like Icon, Dakar, OEM Toyota parts, etc., which were all well worth over $10,000. One night some idiot crashed into the side of his parked truck on the street and the insurance company deemed it totaled. Since I knew the truck's value and was ok with the damage I went ahead and actually bought it on the salvage auction. The damage was almost all bodywork, paint, and replacing a few components. None of the damage was too serious and it was a quick fix. I had a body shop repair it for me and after a few months, it was back on the road. I went ahead and upgraded a lot of the basic worn-out components and just dialed the Tacoma in. To me, this truck is modified just enough for being an extremely fun daily driver while also being very capable of going off-road. This is just a brief history, I do have some paperwork for this truck also but that's too much to write on here. I am also listing the repair details below so you know that the extent of the damage was not all that bad. The overall condition of the truck is good, paint has chips and scratches as usual. The interior is in very good condition and has all-weather floor mats.

Gorgeous truck but I think that salvage/rebuilt title is going to hurt your resale value the most. Why are you selling it after putting so much work into it?

Let me be honest with you. I’ll assume that’s what you want. The add ons mean nothing to the value of the truck. They’re worth about 25-30% percent of the original value if that. The salvage title makes the truck worth even less. Find kbb or nada for that truck non salvage title for the condition it’s in and probably half that. Many insurance companies won’t even insure a salvage title or only let you get liability, so as soon as something happens to it your shit out of luck. Personally I’d never by a salvage title regardless of how good it looked imo.

Do you have any pictures of the damage before repair? I think that would go a long way, proving that it was just in fact body damage. Possibly give the potential new buyer peace of mind and you can get closer to book value.

For what it's worth, my bank will give out loans for salvage title vehicles for 70% of book value.

Edmund's for value of the basic truck (because kbb is not what you think it is) + 25% of value of mods (because someone interested in that truck will understand the value) - 15% for Salvage title (if you have photos, repair docs etc) or -25% for salvage if you don't if you don't.

In my neck of the woods that is a $21-23K truck.

Yeah, my insurance carrier said salvage was a non-starter for coverage when my 93 was totalled. I found a pretty solid first gen that was salvage, had a few mods, OME all around and a custom bumper, was asking a bit under the typical premium price Tacomas pull in the used private market. Owner said it was a front hit, that's when he got the bumper, it blew an airbag, and he replaced that and had CHP inspection on the bag replacement. I was already leery of the truck, and whenI checked with my insurance company, it was a quick NOPE.

@ToyodaTACOma actual dollar pricing is only relevant to your local market/zip code. Looks like Buck County PA, so @HomerTaco would proabbaly be able to offer the best possible local insight.

Assuming your truck is unique is a bit of fantasy. Trucks like this with these aftermarket bits are all over the country.

If you are happy with it and you have adequate insurance coverage now, you'd likely be best off driving it into the ground, which is usually why people buy Toyota in the first place.

    Good luck with your decision.

I think trying to sell that truck is going to be tough and you may not get what would like back. Unless it's a burden to you, keep it.

I just bought my Tacoma and was surprised at how many Tacomas are listed with salvage titles. And it seems like every single seller with a salvage title claimed that the damage was minor (just a panel, no frame damage!) but the insurance company totaled it anyway.

As a buyer, I figured most salvage title sellers were understating the damage because insurance companies aren't in the business of throwing money away. Not saying you are being dishonest, but unless you are selling to a friend your potential buyer can't be sure that you aren't understating the damage because they don't know you. So the salvage title is going to affect value quite a bit and will take longer to sell.

Agree that mods add very little value to a truck.

In my neck of the woods (based on what other salvage trucks I saw for sale), I'd put the value right around $20k.

You need to post pictures of the damage that occurred to the truck. This will give a better visual description of the damage.

In my area the mods don’t add any value to the truck so basically you are selling a 2015 trd sport 4x4 with 68000 miles and a rebuilt title. No more and no less. That’s going to bring in 15k tops. Unlike other states Florida rebuilt titles are forever.

The reason you see so many Tacoma's with rebuilt titles is because they are worth rebuilding. If the frame isn't bent it usually is an easy rebuild. Just locate factory parts in a junkyard or online and replace as needed. An insurance company can't do that so they total it. It would cost the insurance company more to repair than it is worth to them because they can sell it and get a lot of the money back.

Your 20k price is pretty spot on in many areas.

I agree that Tacomas are worth rebuilding and are easier to rebuild than a unibody. However, insurance companies can and do have auto body shops put used parts on wrecked cars, including junkyard parts. I went through this last year when my daughter was in an accident and they were going to put junkyard doors on (later they found hidden damage and totaled it anyway).

The market for rebuilding vehicles is for people that can make money by (1) charging less than an auto body shop (the auto body shop we used had the rates between $50 and $100 / hr depending on the technician), (2) ability to secure parts for lower cost (the u-Pull junkyard is cheaper than having someone else pull it), and (3) cutting corners (hopefully not, but some do). The worry for a buyer is that the rebuilder is (a) cutting corners and/or (b) doesn't know how to do a proper repair.

It's a beautiful truck, so I'd keep it if I was you. But if you decide to sell, good luck with sale!

Mods add zero value, and may in fact hurt the value.

If you’re set on selling the truck, remove any mods that you can possibly sell individually later, and then sell just the barebone truck. As mentioned, the salvage title will hurt you a bit.

Your truck is probably about $12k.

Me personally, I’d never buy a salvage truck no matter what the “story” is. Then again, down here in Houston area, most salvage vehicles are flooded vehicles.

For the most part, rebuilt title vehicles are most valuable to the person who rebuilt the vehicle. Anyone else will not only have to be convinced of the quality of the rebuilding, but will want it for half of what the seller wants to sell it for. If you did the work, drive it and enjoy it. You most likely will not get nearly what you think it's worth selling for. As a previous owner of several salvage title vehicles, that's how I know it works where I live.

To address everyone, I understand this truck will not appeal to everyone. I am asking for people that would consider buying a rebuilt Tacoma how much they would be willing to pay. I I’m selling for financial reasons, sucks but I got to do it. I am looking for accident photos will post once I find them.

OK then look in your local paper for a stock truck just like yours. Add $1000 for your improvements and then subtract 25% because it is a rebuild. That will get you close.
A lot depends on where you are from. Some areas it is worth only $14,000 others 22,000 or possibly more. I know in Montana Tacoma's are at a premium. So much so my nieces husband bought a 2019 Nissan because he couldn't afford a Tacoma even a couple years older.
