26 years nice!!! That’s awesome. I enjoyed my 10 years. Honestly only reason I got out was because the job I had in the Navy actually pays quadruple in the civilian sector. No more moving every 3-5 years and 4x the amount of money to do the same job equaled a no brainer 10 year (halfway) decision to get out.

I would post a picture, but I'm not home currently (away for work).

On my taco I have license plate frame with top lettering NAVY and bottom lettering VETERAN. Blue background and yellow color letters.

Haven't done the paper work for my license plate vet status, yet.

Honestly, I don't know. Didn't pay too much attention then to Naval customs. Funny though, because my first westpac was on the USS Essex, which I think was it's maiden westpac as well. So maybe I own planks on two shipso_O Earned my Shellback card the hard way on that boat, Mar '95.

Yeah that’s true for sure. Just didn’t know if he commissioned the ship as well as went on it’s first maiden voyage is why I was asking :)

We were lucky enough to do our shellback initiation in 2005. Fun times. Also in 2006, the CO pulled us into Majuro in the Marshall Islands. Apparently it was the first time a Navy ship had visited there since WWII. They didn’t even have enough tug boats to accommodate such a large ship. Fun times.

Absolutely. Have the veteran plates on both my rides. 8 years was enough for me.

A lot of Marines here, that’s awesome. I’m familiar with sky out. My job is in aviation so I’m kinda a nerd with anything ships and planes. I’m a Air Traffic Controller. Got out as an AC1 and been doing it ever since. 21 years later. Time flies.

It’s not a rule, but it’s not normal for a Marine to be a plankowner on that type of ship. My guess is he was in a unit embarked for workups and deployment, which would not have been part of the ship at its commissioning. Plus, being a plankowner of USS John C Stennis myself, it is an experience you would know if you were part of - kinda cool, but a long and unpleasant day for the crew, at least until the reception afterward! And you would have one of those certificates similar to shellback. Absolutely doesn’t take away from anyone’s service, tho, whether one is or isn’t. Deployment is much harder!!

You aren’t kidding, deployments were very tough. Especially when kids are involved because they don’t understand why dad or mom is gone so long....
