I’m sorry if this has already been mentioned, but when you say at idle, are you increasing the speed of the crawl control on the dial or is this all at the minimum crawl control speed? You can also apply throttle yourself during crawl control. As long as you don’t hit the brakes it stays engaged (at least on my truck).

So different use cases. Mine will crawl over a standard curb from a stop at the curb, start out in a steep dirt road, and stays on even after accelerating and then braking.

Mine stayed on even after braking as well. Had to hit the button for it to turn off.

In retrospect, I think you may be right about the braking. I want to say if I hold the brakes long enough it will shut off otherwise I have to hit the button. My question was more for the guys who are having a hard time going up hill or over 4x4s. Are you just trying to idle along at the lowest crawl setting or are you increasing crawl speed and/or applying throttle?

I had never used it and wasn't really sure. I selected my speed setting and let off the brake and it applied throttle itself for each of the speeds I tested in. No input was needed by me.

I tried at max crawl speed and it didn't seem to want to give any throttle. You aren't supposed to need it anyways, during CC. I used it a few times on my 2015 4Runner and it would apply throttle as needed up hill.

I tried increasing the speed with the crawl control knob, but that didn’t help.
Crawl control should apply throttle as needed. That’s the way it works in my 4Runner.
There is a major difference now it works between my 4Runner & the wife’s Taco.

I did data logging using OBD Fusion following the same process I outlined above. Using my foot, it took around 4% relative throttle position to climb the wood blocks. With crawl control, it held the throttle consistent at around 2.5% relative throttle position. In total CC deactivated and released the throttle after 45 seconds.

My father and his business partner took their 2020 and 2016 out today and compared Crawl Control on both vehicles. Feel free to use this to show Toyota and try and get more traction on getting this resolved.

Mine did the same. I didn't have a chance to find some dirt, but stopped on a 10* paved grade, added a 4x6 block and a 5x10 paver in front of the front tires and a 4x4 and 2x4 in front of the rear's.

I engaged CC on the 3rd setting, released the brake, and it just idled there. After 15 seconds or so, I lightly tapped the gas, and it immediately started moving and went over the blocks with no problem. I then hit the brakes to stop, but CC stayed engaged. I lifted off the brake, and it started moving again. I had to push the button to disengage.

This is my first tacoma so I have no previous experience btw. Curious if other 2020's are noticing the same as well.

CC stays engaged until you turn it off with the button. You can override it with manual brake or throttle, it will go back on CC once there are no longer driver inputs.

I'm going to get out there tomorrow and do the same hill with more "obstacles" in the way to see how it reacts. I'll record it was well just for shits and giggles.

Thanks for the videos and everyone trying different scenarios. If we all call Toyota corporate and submit cases of crawl control not functioning properly, they will come out with a fix or a statement that they changed the system. I am the type that I didn’t spend all of this money for a feature to not work as advertised. Even Toyota has a video or picture of a 2020 going up a rock hill on their crawl control ad.

thanks to all and hopefully we will get a solution!

Can you try logging the wheel speed sensors?

I wonder if it has something to do with the door sensor, I know if I open the door on my rig it turns off crawl control when activated

Mine doesn’t work either. 2020 TRD OR. I didn’t look for the build date. It does work going down hill. We did a very steep downhill last night and it worked like it’s supposed to. I changed the speeds with the knob and it all worked good. Uphill, no dice. I’ll contact my dealer then call that 800 number someone posted. My ‘16 TRD OR worked as it should and never shut down like this one.

Since it worked great going downhill, I’m going to go test it now going uphill. Maybe it learned something, lol.

So once again in the interest of science, I did a small experiment in the gravel drive. I used bricks and wood blocks to simulate rocks or other obstructions on a gravel 'trail'. Nothing I stacked up could make the cc disengage. If the computer decided it needed more throttle then it did so on it's own. I actually tried to make the system fail. Obstacles as high as 10". No failures. I did amuse the neighbors however. He wandered over and asked just what the hell I was doing. I mentioned this forum and thread and he just shook his head. He stated that he was sure the truck was capable of traversing the obstacles in 'regular' 4x4 without all that new fangled crap as he put it. And of course he was correct, I did it to amuse him.

You folks with the 2020's need to band together and make Toyota live up to the advertised claims.
