I swapped my smartkey FOB over to a MESO Minimalist Key FOB and now need a way to carry the spare physical key. I found a few places that have Toyota key blanks, but none of them know how to mount the non-standard shaped OEM spare key in the machine to copy it. Is there anyone (other than dealer) that can copy the spare key from the OEM key fob to a standard shaped key?

Not that I know of. Interested to see what you find out. That would be helpful because it is a little awkward key

Why do I need the key? Because you can't leave the truck running and lock the doors without use of the physical key. Why do I not want to put the FOB's OEM hidden key on my keychain? Because it's hole is too small to fit on my keychain and even if it did it lays awkwardly.

I was thinking more like, why rid of the OEM Fob which had a perfectly designed space for you to securely stow and retrieve such key, at your convenience?

Because, 1) the attachment point is the hidden spare key which doesn't fit my keychain and 2) it's huge.

Didn't your truck come with a real physical key? I hid mine on the truck. Glued some neodymium magnets onto a hidakey and double wrapped in military grad ziplocs

Nope. Just two smartkey fobs. If I had a regular key, this wouldn't be an issue.

I gave up and just cut off the key and a sacrificial house key and brazed the two together.

That's still drying primer for upcoming paint. "A grinder and paint makes me the brazer I ain't"

AJT designs, sales them were you can store your key inside just like the OEM. There is a reason why Toyota designed the fob with the key inside.

Think they can cut the key now that it's regular? I wouldn't wanna rely on that braze holding up to the stress of turning

Nope, that's just my key now :)

It's a bit thicker than a stock key as I built the material up over the OEM Toyota key on both sides. It's sandwiched in there pretty good and didn't give any sign of letting go with 30 test locks/unlocks.

Just thought I'd give an update... key is still holding up well and I've now used it multiple times as it's peaked over 100 here in AZ and I leave the car running when my dog is in it.

Slightly related question. I just bought a 2019 Tacoma and am having a remote start put in next week. Since that will lock and unlock the doors, I'm wondering if I can get a couple of non remote keys for the truck? I'd just like to use a couple of "chip keys" without remote function.

    Thanks.
