My brother has a 2005 Tacoma that he parked for 10 months ( had trouble getting parts to repair it). He now fixed it and the truck won't come out of park. It's not the cable because he unhooked it from the tranny or wherever it hooks up and it moves freely. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

What parts were you waiting on?? Did it have anything to do with the brake pedal or transmission??

Something related to the brake pedal/shifter switch maybe?

The ball joints let go on one side so he ordered all the parts but he had to get not just the ball joints but the control arms also and everything was back ordered, then winter hit so he left it. Picked up the parts Friday and fixed it. I just spoke to him and he told me that it's the module that is stuck so he put loose nut on it and hopefully it will do the trick.

You can pop the little tab out next to the shifter and push down the neutral park release so you can shift it from park.

check the fuse panel under the dash check fuse number 4 that's the shift lock fuse. I think that could be it, I had something similar in my 3rd gen after disconnecting the battery to do some electrical work some how that fuse popped and I couldn't shift out of park either.

Not the fuse, the shifter can be moved sideways only, he says it's the box on the tranny where the cable goes in.

your park neutral switch is frozen. try spraying it with lube and tapping it with a hammer lightly while someone else is trying to move the shifter.
