I need to replace my 1st gen due to frame holes and rust. Its an 04 trd 4x4.

I found a 2016 2wd for $19k locally that doesnt look too bad. ~80k miles. This is more than my previous one cost 10 years ago with the same mileage but i guess that is to be expected.

I see the carfax shows yet another frame recall / campaign for frame rust. Looks like they coat it with the same shit that my last truck had. I am not sure if this has been done on this truck yet.

Thing is...i live in a cold weather state so massive rust apparently is to be expected. I dont quite understand why toyotas rust so much faster than anything else i have driven but it is what it is.

    The recall states:

Description: Toyota has received reports regarding frame corrosion perforation on 2011 ? 2017 model year Tacoma vehicles. In these reports, customers have indicated that vehicles operated in specific cold climateareas with high road salt usage may exhibit more-than-normal corrosion to the vehicle?s frame. This condition is unrelated to and separate from normal surface rust which is commonly found on metallic surfaces aftersome years of usage and/or exposure to the environment.

Remedy: Any authorized Toyota dealer in the Cold Climate States (CCS) will first inspect the condition of the vehicle?s frame under associated Customer Support Program (CSP) ZKA. Based upon the results and date of theinspection, the dealership will do one of the following: If qualifying rust perforation is not found, and the vehicle is located in a Cold Climate State, the dealer will apply Corrosion Resistant Compound (CRC) and/or install frame plugs to key areas of the vehicle?s frame FREE OF CHARGE to the owner under Limited Service Campaign (LSC) K0D. If qualifying rust perforation is not found, and the vehicle is not located in a Cold Climate State, no further action is required. If significant rust perforation is found, the dealer will replace the vehicle?s frame FREE OF CHARGE to the owner under Customer Support Program ZKA if all conditions of the program are met.

I guess im looking at 19k for a 4 year old truck that will likely suffer the same fate as my current one did.

Are their any other glaring problems i should be looking for in this later generation? Any reason to steer clear of this year?

I would LOVE to get another 4x4 for the harsh winters here but i think i used mine in my current truck just a hand full of times each winter. I dont offroad because im always at work and i just need a good truck to get me to and from work.....and to haul the crap back and forth from the home stores.

I had this done to my truck already and it's not the "same shit" your last truck had. This is a waxy coating sprayed only inside the frame rails and then plastic plugs are put in to seal it off from water etc getting inside the frame. Time will tell but having that done gives you a 12? year warranty on the frame.

Biggest things to do would be test drive to makes sure you know how the transmission shifts in the 3rd gen.
Look for oil leaks around the ps pump as timing cover has been a known issue.
80k I'd look at maintenance like spark plugs and trans fluid.
Otherwise just general used vehicle stuff.

4x4 is a must for me, due to our winters here.

Krown Rustproofing is another must for me. My vehicles still look great after 10+ years of use because of rustproofing. Frame included.

You can buy a new one for about $8,000 more, you save a lot by going with a 2WD both upfront and in the long run and you have a better on road Vehicle (except in certain winter conditions. ) Buy a New one. To be fair this is assuming you can find one in 2WD, as many people think 4WD is a must. Don't worry about resale, they all hold value as you can see.

If you live in a "cold weather" state, why would you even consider 2WD??

I'd do what P-Dawg said above if I could. You can probably get a new access cab 4X4 for about 9K more.
And with possible 0% interest your only looking at a little over $100/month more in payments and you'd have a brand new truck with no miles.
