Did a low speed U turn today and got a “pop.... pop.... pop....” from my front end. Was able to replicate it in the driveway when turning hard left. Turning right doesn’t make a noise and it only makes the noise while in motion.

My first thought was a bad CV joint, but correct me if I’m wrong, would a CV joint not make that noise when not under power (ie, not in 4x4)?

Also, would a bad needle bearing cause that noise? I installed a lift with OME 885 coils and Dakar’s about a month ago, so needle bearing problems wouldn’t surprise me.

I’m just trying to figure out what parts to order, but am a little confused at the moment.

Id be curious of your CV angle. a CV shaft can in fact pop like that even in 2wd.

I don't know what 2nd gen steering racks are like, but when my 1st gen steering rack guide got over tightened it created a really gnarly POP POP POP when turning left only. Backing off the torque on the rack guide a bit got rid of it entirely.

If you haven't messed with the rack guide at all then I doubt this would be the case, I'd be checking all bolts on that side and see if your tie rod has any slop to it.

Nah, haven’t messed with the rack at all so I don’t think it’s this. But... there’s slop in both CV’s, drivers side especially, making them all the more suspect.

Angles aren’t bad at all. I’m wondering if a joint wasn’t on its way out anyway and being at a slightly new angle was just the straw on the camels back.

I really was hoping it was this simple but everything’s tight. Guess it’s a CV axle after all. Thanks guys. Unfortunately it’ll be next weekend before I get a chance to tear into it.

How much play in the CVs? Some play is normal esp on the drivers side. But too much is a problem.

65k miles, wouldn’t have thought a CV could go that low, but who knows.

Then it would do it without the vehicle having to be in motion, right?

I suppose it's possible to make a ball joint pop while stationary but usually the vehicle has to be in motion to make it pop

Man enough to admit when I'm wrong, but sure enough, the driver's CV was all tore up. Replaced it and did the ECGS bushing at the same time.
