Issue with oil draining during oil change

Hi, I bought a 2019 Tacoma Off-Road last July. I’m old school & like to change oil every 5k. My question is, does anyone have an issue with the oil draining? I’ve used the adapter included with filter, I bought a Motivx adapter too. I still have a problem with the oil draining unless I let the engine briefly run with the adapter screwed in. What’s going on?

I've yet to change mine in my 19 (taking free dealer ones for now) but I'm a little confused. Are you saying oils not coming out of the drain plug or out of the filter?

 

You don't need to drain the cartridge completely. Just a few ounces so that it doesn't make a mess. Running your motor with no oil is much, much worse than sticking with a 10k interval. Don't do that.

 

Sounds like the adapter may not be putting enough pressure in place to open up the relief.

The adapter is just for the oil filter cartridge... you still have to remove the oil pan plug...

 

oh lets hope OP knows that.....and also doesn't drain the tranny instead

Are you taking out the plug in the bottom of the oil pan? I sure hope so.

The adapter is only to drain the filter housing in order to reduce mess, you don't actually need the thing.

Do NOT run your engine with the oil system opened up, that'll get expensive.

Did you open the fill cap so it can vent? Makes a difference for sure.

 

I just drain a little out of the filter prior to removing it

 

$5 this guy drained the filter and forgot about the oil pan.

 

Or he drained the tranny fluid instead of the oil.

You might want to try bring more specific OP.

 

Okay. Never had a filter system like this on previous vehicles. What I understand from all of you is that I need to drain the oil from the filter. Then drain the pan. Got it. I’m really not as stupid as my post makes me sound, I promise. Thanks

Did you remove the threaded drain plug from the bottom of the oil pan? 6qt of oil will drain from there... only 0.2qt will drain from the filter housing.

 

All good man. It's just like a normal change but the plastic housing is reused and you just change the filter element instead of spinning on and off a new filter.

 

Not much comes out of the filter drain, I usually dont even use the thing. Just crank it off and spray it down before putting it back on.

 

No. Pan first.

If you still have the pan plug in and start the motor while trying to drain the cartridge, all that you are doing is refilling the cartridge.

 

No worries man, the process is the same except you can pre-drain the filter before removing as opposed to having it explode oil everywhere like the older filters.

 

i never even use the drain plug gizmo on the bottom of the filter cap. after draining the oil from the engine i slide the bucket under the oil filter and unscrew the filter until oil runs out and goes into the pan. when it stops i remove and pour what's in the filter into the bucket. YES, i know, a little messy but the first time i did an oil change i tried opening the little drain gizmo and the whole filter cap turned ,decided to do it that way from then on. like you say " Never had a filter system like this on previous vehicles".
