Maybe he's under the impression that it's $150 per stiffener?

Correct, it's not a "must do"... not even necessarily a "should do". For me it was a "can do", that turned into a "fuck it, I'm gonna do"... I regret nothing and they've come in handy multiple times.

    ^^^ This.

Mine were in preparation for a wedge camper that never materialized. They came in handy on multiple occasions for actual work or convenience. Money well spent, IMHO.

Now, they get the 'tough' duty of resisting spread from a Softopper.:rofl:

So what if you have something that anchors the two sides together such as a hard tonneau cover, canopy or overland rack, are the stiffeners still necessary?

Those provide no additional stiffness at all. The canopies and racks are contributing factors to the spread.

In my opinion I like the look of them and extra tie down points. Are they necessary? Not sure but I don’t care.

yes, i agree, i like the high tie down points. plus, when I sleep in the back of my truck for camping or whatever it will give me a place to hang stuff so it doesnt get lost in the bed!!

I installed @At The Helm versions before I installed my Snungtop. Very pleased with them and stoked they came with integrated bottle openers before anyone else did.
