My Dad fondly calls them "Pedros", and I believe piloted them a few times in Thailand.

Still a popular Russian design, used a lot for heavy lifting in AFG.

Guys, I'm old but not Korea old. They came out after the Korean war but saw plenty of service during Viet Nam.

"Pedro" was typically their call sign, though some bases used others. As a side note they used the same engine as the Huey. And for quite some time held the absolute altitude record. The counter rotating main rotor did away with the need of a tail rotor. All of the power could go into lift / speed.

Ask him what base. I was at NKP. He'll know what that means.

Yup... Kamov's helicopters, look close at modern developments, like KA-52, "Black Shark"....

The Kaman predated Soviet twin rotors. The USN used an earlier version of the H-43.
