I took a small gamble and found one on Ebay for cheap. I pulled the trigger despite having read all the issues with the several that are out there. And yes, it does crimp the cable and the one I have (Kraton) won't allow the tailgate to close. I pulled the cylinder out to rethink this. It's a great idea. Too bad there are all these issues.

Has anyone got this to work?......

Didn't bother because of all the bad reviews. Installed a Gen 3 assist kit from TW's Christian06. More money but works FANTASTIC and should last the life of the truck. Money and time well spent.

I'm going to try this one later in the summer. Will report back if I have favorable results...

I've had this one on for a couple years now. Works great, no problems.

I've have had mine on for couple of years now, no problems except for I gone through 2 tailgate support cables, too be fair with my business I open it 20-30 times a day, 5 days a week ... as for me it was a good purchase.

After reading more reviews, the difficulties that I'm having and others have had might be due to bed stiffeners not letting the bed to "flare" out and provide more clearance. This is just a guess...
