Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Well, it’s an average CB radio. If everyone else in your group has one and all you want is line of sight communication it will do that. No licenses or special skills needed.

HAM radio gets you more power and options, but it requires more knowledge and a license.

it depends on why you want it and how you’re going to use it.

I mean, you're not going to get any broverlander points for it, but as long as it actually works, it beats not having one at all.

    Especially if it's free.

If you go wheeling in groups, it matters more what most of them use, rather than getting the "best" radio. If no one in your group uses CB, then it's useless. Same for HAM; if everyone uses CB, them HAM is useless. The group I have gone out with typically just use GMRS handhelds. They work perfectly fine for our needs.

If it's free why not? I run Ham and GMRS, but I have debated a CB because that is what gets used by the loggers operating in some of the areas I wander in.
