I’m pretty sure that ideas and politics were always about as Jerry Springer as they are today. Just because you put lipstick on the sheriff’s goat in the 80s (and didn’t know it was lipstick then) doesn’t mean he and you are going home with anything but a goat in this particular moment. Well cops have camera systems in the cars now that run every plate that it can capture. They are looking for people with expired registration, outstanding warrants or anything else you can get picked up or pulled over for. The machine does it all day with no limits while it's turned on.

 

Happened to us, we got pulled on the interstate cause they said my wife had a warrant. Turns out they pulled the wrong car

Here’s what could be done:

file police report
Police departments coordinate and share information
Undercover officer purchases tailgate.
During purchase, lots of cleverly placed questions asked regarding what, where and how.
Once secured, tailgate can then be dusted for fingerprints and hopefully matched with owner, key can be matched, then paint match and lastly maybe the strike marks can be matched between bed frame and tailgate.
Once you get enough evidence that tailgate was stolen, then search warrant is secured for other stolen property. More stolen items are found. Suspect arrested.

Well, this is what could happen in another part of the country, but probably not LA and surrounding area. Sadly property crimes are so low on the totem pole.
