I see a lot of Tacomas with SCS and method wheels. What other brands are good and affordable? I'm purposely ignoring the pricy JDM wheels like Volk, work and bbs.

Raceline are available with a lot of sizes and styles and aren't super expensive either. Nicer machining than some pretty expensive brands. Procomp has some decent wheels if you make sure the particular model works with your brakes. I have a set of Dick Cepek wheels which were like $150 new.

FN Wheels sells various flowformed Volk and Work clones branded as Konigs. I have a set of 16" Konig Countersteer Offroad wheels and will probably get the 17" Konig Six-Shooter wheels when I go to 35" tires.

Fifteen52 has a Turbomac wheel if you like the rally look, but it's heavy: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fifteen52-turbomac-hds.566240/

    I wonder what's better, 16 or 17
such as with respect to weight, where that weight is placed (probably in the barrel farther out), brake clearance, and tire choice

I've done a lot of research on wheels (and spent too much money on wheels), and there's some truth to this. Unless you step up to the super strong forged wheels (which is super expensive and overkill for most people), OEM is going to give you about the same strength/weight as cheaper aftermarket wheels.

Some brands, like Method Racing and SCS, however, are known for being a quality product with good (i.e., strong) casting methods. Personally, I'm looking for a non-forged wheel that will save me unsprung weight...I have yet to find one that justifies paying $1000+ over my stock wheels. Although I am tempted to get the SCS F5s just based on looks lol
