I was going to message/email @OVTune directly but thought I would share the conversation here in case someone else was interested.

In the 3rd gen ovtuned turbo kit there is an option to upgrade the DI injectors. Aside from drawbacks of using DI only for example dirty intake valves, is there any performance to be gained on a non-turbo 2GR-FKS using larger injectors?

@OVTune, have you experimented with this?

I don't think you understood my question. Maybe I didn't explain it well enough. My understanding was that the DI injectors on a stock engine are really only used at low RPMs and light loads.

    Why?

A lot of manufacturers that use GDI injectors in their engines to squeeze a few more mpg out end up recalling their engines or issuing service campaigns to deal with the carbon buildup on the intake valves, that pretty much makes the vehicle un-driveable due to misfires. Its not an "if" issue, more of a "when" it happens kind of thing.

Just look at Toyota/Lexus and the IS250 carbon buildup issues they had for example (new pistons and rings as a service campaign, which is just a band aid). Or pretty much any Kia/Hyundai made in the last few years. And the VW's suffered as well.
