Just took in my 2019 Tacoma, 3.5, after the check engine light popped. Dealer needed to keep it over the weekend because the code said “Cyl 3 misfire”, according to my service rep. The truck only has 18,000 miles...and is primarily driven on the highway. Engine oil has been changed in time, I use good gas....is this a normal thing? I thought these things were supposed to be bullet proof.

Ah, a purist. This is my first Toyota, just a little disappointed.

Deffently not a "normal thing" at 18000 miles. I know on some other vehicals the P303 code (cyl. 3 missfire) is a type of generic code the the ECM will throw when it knows something is wrong but can not pinpoint it. I not 100% sure that is the case with the 3rd gens, but I have seen similar situations that resulted in things like a glitch in the airflow meter, or O2 sensor.

Oh ok. Still, though. The fact that this happened is a little nuts to me. 50 miles of driving a day, 75 mph on the highway. And has been off-road one time, for 5 minutes to pull a trailer out of sand (MTS for the win)...is a little odd to me.

Some parts just fail early, it's under warranty, let Toyota fix it. Could be as simple as a bad coil or fuel injector. Stuff does happen.

Yeah that’s what they told me it would probably be. It was taken in the following day of the light pop, so hopefully they get back with me today and tell me it wasn’t anything huge.

Nothing is infallible..... Electronic stuff does just have some things that prematurely fail (infant-mortality), most of the time it doesn't (if made well) and it's very reliable. Sometimes you get something that fails. Just a fact of life.

When everything was mechanical, you could actually ensure this doesn't happen, but that required everyone to be on their A game when building it (and good design). Still, what we have now is better.

Anyways, as long as something didn't cause the failure, I wouldn't sweat it. It happens. Now if a bunch of things go wrong at different times.... well, then I'd be concerned.

BTW, this truck ain't perfect, but it's pretty good for what it is.

Update: Service manager called me and told me injector was bad, and "an internal part". when i asked what part, he didn't know and said he'd ask the mechanic....doesn't sound promising. They will have it till Friday or Saturday.
