I think they are even worse than we were, but I learned a lot at other peoples expense. I was 19, most fun job I've ever had.

My Pentastar in my old Wrangler served me well. Let her go at 97k miles. The engine and transmission in that thing were solid. It was everything else that wasn’t. Specifically, the steering components.

No cylinder head ticking, no bad valve lashes and rear main seal leak? Pentastars were poop.

I wouldn't get overly excited about Hertz selling off inventory. They're going to emerge from Chap. 11 in good shape. How Hertz buys and pays for cars is pretty complex. There is a separate Hertz entity that buys the cars and then leases them to the rental company. That corporation is not part of the bankruptcy.

As far as selling cars, only the best end of rental life cars are sold off of the corporate lots. Vehicles that had significant mechanical issues or body damage are wholesaled off. Just as any dealer who takes a car in trade does when he gets a car he doesn't want on his lot. I've had three off rental cars. Two were Chrysler products and one was a Camry. All were very good cars, especially the Camry.

Filing for bankruptcy was mostly a negotiating tactic since the banks that hold a lot of loans didn't want to renegotiate. Also, those on airport rental centers are very expensive for Hertz, and ultimately the customers. They will probably try to get a better deal on those too. If anything, I expect to see some of the off airport "Local Edition" sites to close. Unless they are good sized money makers, Hertz might be better off just closing them and leaving that part of the market to Enterprise and others.

I'd avoid a rental. I feel bad for whoever bought the Charger R/T off fleet sales that they rented me for 2 weeks.

That said, a truck might be a little better since most aren't 4wd or tow hitch equipped unless its a mandatory feature

I rent cars a couple of times a year for work (and sometimes for pleasure, I took a road trip last summer in a rented Cadillac CTS) and I've gotta say, I'm not one who abuses rental cars. Maybe I'm alone in that thinking. I also don't trash Hotel rooms either
