96k would you change transmission fluid?

    I guess we’ll just go with the anecdotal “transmission shop” recommendations and skip over Toyota’s clear reductions in WS fluid change intervals. They are currently recommending changing the fluid every 100k and every 60k under severe use (which included driving on dusty and dirty roads).

    but yeah, Gene down at the tranny shop has got ya covered.

    there are many people here that have logged more miles than that. There’s a YouTube video of a guy put over 900k on his Tacoma. Claims he didn’t change plugs either.

    I fall in to the drain fill camp. I don't like pulling the pan and throwing parts at it unless I have a compelling reason to because there is a chance that I could strip a bolt or it doesn't seal quite right. If I drained it and metal came out or there is a burnt smell or the pan seal was leaking, I would change course. I bought our truck for my son and it had 220k miles and a drain fill provides me with a baseline of how the truck was treated. It also gives me confidence that the level is correct. The previous owner may have had a leak, disconnected the cooling lines at the radiator or pulled the wrong plug (instead of the oil). If I buy a used vehicle, I assume that it was not cared for.

    Where are the original and updated change frequencies documented? My truck did not come with an owners manual. The Hayne's manual recommends changing the fluid and filter every 30K miles - that seems very excessive.

    yes not to start a pissin contest just saying it runs the gamut from nuts who change trans fluid every oil change to people that never change. So the truth would be somewhere in between and certainly how it’s been used. We could say and perhaps agree that fluid change is cheap insurance. Mines going to be changed because @ 194k I just don’t know if or when it was ever done and I don’t buy into WS being a lifetime fluid.

    Did a full flush with pan drop and filter change at 125,000 on my 2010 automatic. It was cheap and pretty easy. I’ve done a drain and fill since then, also. Currently at almost 160,000. No issues. Shifts smoother. I also installed a Magnafine magnetic filter on the return line from the cooler.

    I’d say change it.

    Yes do a drain and fill, and plan for another in the next 10-20k miles.

    Recently I was in the same boat and read countless threads on this topic. My 2013 Tacoma with 100k and my wife's 2006 4runner with 130k (same engine and tranny) were bought without knowing if this had ever been done. I bit the bullet and did a drain and fill on each. No problems at all. Have since done another drain and fill on the 4Runner. Still no problems. Now my Taco has 130k and the 4R has 150k. The transmissions have not developed issues and I feel much better about the fresh fluid. Search for the drain and fill thread on here and do the temp check procedure. Seems wild but not really that difficult.
