Okay, regular deliveries are done early and I have a long break til I go to the psychiatric hospital.

Story time.

I lived in Greenville, SC for about 10 years.

In the mid-80s I built a house for a co-worker / friend of one of my cousins.
I forget his first name...everybody called him Callahan, so I did too.
So he was a crusty old guy who wanted me to build his retirement home, a simple ranch house.
He'd bought some land near Easley with an old tobacco barn on it and was living in the barn.
The deal was, he wanted to put in some "sweat equity".
I dunno why I agreed to do it.

He had two refrigerators, both filled with Michelob beer.
Every time I saw him, he had one in his hand.
Anyway, it was a record breaking Summer that year.
Over 100 F every single day. And the low before sunup was never below 85 F.
We'd work from first light until noon.

So we had a running battle about everything.
Not what you might think. It was funny as Hell.
He disputed everything just for the fun of it, and then we did things my way.
He'd shove an opened beer at me every chance he got.
And he absolutely loved dirty jokes.

Me: "Jeez, Callahan, you trying to kill me? It's over 100 degrees. Anyway, I don't drink while I'm working."
Callahan: "Aw C'mon, don't be such a tight ass."
Me: "I'll stick to water, thanks."

One day it came time set the trusses to do the roof decking.
He brought in his two sons. Big husky guys.

Callahan: "Okay boys, Mister Carpenter don't hold with drinking on the job. If you do, he says he's gonna kick yer fucking asses."
Me:
So him and his boys got a lot of mileage out of that one...it was a long day.

When it came time to work on the interior, I got a surprise.
He wanted to do the walls all in pine boards.
He had saved them from packing crates over the years from work.
He had a huge pile of them in his barn.
They were all different lengths.


What I came up with was a kind of random herringbone pattern.
He was pleased, and I have to say, it didn't look bad.
It was definitely unique.

I really got to like that old bastard.
He was unique as well.

 

Dream getaway!

Dirk, Murph and I would gladly keep eye on that cabin whenever it’s not occupied! Forget Mcrib!

 

How long will your stay be this time? Standard 48 hour observation or are you going full vacation?

 

Every time you post that picture, I hate it a little more.
