2005 Tacoma DBL Cab 4x4 Auto SR5 Speedometer Not Working

BLUF: Right rear ABS sensor was not connected properly

Hi guys! I created an account here to share my experience and add to the knowledge base since this was one of the sites I used to research.

Symptoms: Speedometer stayed at 0 mph, all other gauges working, no CEL, no ABS light or any warning lights on instrument cluster, cruise control still worked, P0500 on code reader. The problem started this past Monday while driving in rain but that might not have been a factor. Speedometer starting working again yesterday for about 10 minutes then stopped again.

After reading about 40 threads I found one saying that instrument cluster gets speed reading from the right rear ABS sensor on automatic Tacomas. I decided to clean all sensors and was going to swap sensors to see if I could get the fault to move. That's when I realized the right wheels ABS sensor had a broken clip but enough friction to make it appear the sensor was connected but it wasn't. For now I just placed a think rubber band from some broccoli to hold in place until I either get a new connector or find a longer lasting solution than a rubber band which won't last long.

Thanks again for all the threads. I had no idea that auto and manual transmissions determined speed differently and how the signals were routed.
