With so many surge sensitive electronics around these days, and the inconvenience of power outages I installed a back up generator for the entire house. It's natural gas powered. Basically if the power goes our there is a slight delay before the generator kicks in. But the power is sweet and there is no significant surge. Obviously the computer has a UPS on it. Once the power comes back it starts another delay which allows things to settle down before switching back to normal power. Expensive for the generator, ATS, and installation, but worth it in these days of "Planned Power Outages" for either fire danger or just to high a demand.

I believe the Col has one as well. We have had a generator back-up here since 2012 as power seems to leave us every winter due to snow and wind then most Springs with the high winds. It is a nice back-up and secure feeling in certain situations.

    Good Night all

Happy Pappy Day to all you Pappys and kids thereof! :)

I don't think standby generators by themselves prevent powerline surges from entering the home.

We've had our share of electrical storm-related damage here. I have a whole house thingie that I'm not sure does much, and I also have all sensitive electronics behind UPS's. Even so I had a circuit board blow out in our TV a couple of years ago. According to the folks who helped me source parts to fix it, the damage was likely done by a surge coming in over the cable coax. Just can't win it seems...

Good morning, all. I was as surprised as anyone to see the picture in the paper yesterday. I'm blessed to have had this chance to lead the college. I AM going to miss it. But, part of good leadership is knowing when to turn it loose...and it's ready for the next phase of its growth. Life is good.

We have a whole house generator since we built back in 2004. We replaced the old one last year - the new technology is much better and powers everything where the old one had to have a separate sub-panel where we selected what to put on it. We have a 1000 gal propane submarine buried in the yard that powers it - and the rest of our heating system as well.

    Be safe, everyone!!

Just going to throw this out for the heck of it.
If any other coots in N.E. PA care to partake in a round of golf on any Monday, I would like to join you.
No, I'm not good. If anything an average bogey golfer. Sure, a birdie here or there but also a bogey or worse when i blow up a hole.

I might have to join you someday. I'm about the same level but haven't touched my clubs since last fall. We've got family coming in for the next three weeks so maybe after that!
