Hey guys, new to the forum. I have been reading about tacomas on here for a while and decided I am getting my son one. My question is that since I live on the outer banks I would like the truck to have the ability to drive on the beach. I am looking a at 2019 sr5 with 33'' tires and a leverage kit.

Will this be okay on the beach or should I keep looking for one with a TRD package? These are incredibly hard to find btw.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    thanks

    1. Welcome to TW!
    2. TRD not required, but 4WD might be a better choice for a beach truck. Some of our less-maintained areas in South Texas do "strongly recommend" 4WD in loose sand. Not sure what NC beaches are like, but I would assume the same.
    3. 3" lift and 33's (also recommend a CMC) offset much of the RWD issue, but not all of it.

What are they asking for that 2019?

They are asking 28,000. Has 15000 miles. I am thinking the bigger tires would offset the 4x4 on the beach. I probably will never off road other than the beach. NC beaches are pretty deep sandy in places.

A friend of mine has a 4x4 Colorado. The only place he uses 4WD is on the beach. He also has a pair of Maxtrax that he often finds himself needing if he's been parked too long on loose sand.

That price isn't too bad, but it could be only because it's RWD. Haven't been pricing them since I bought mine in Dec 2015.

Yeah I think the price is because of RWD. I have been looking for a deal on a tacoma 4x4 reasonably priced with decent miles but those are few and far between. Even Carmax and places like that the inventory is scarce

I think you might need to cast your net wider for a decent 4WD 2019, or expand to look at 2017s and 2018s. Even with a 4x4 you'll probably need traction boards and decent shovels as many of the Jeeple around here have proven...

...they get themselves stuck for fun and then see how quickly they can get unstuck. Must be a Jeep thing. :notsure:

Got my '16 SR5 with 35k miles for right at 28k OTD....but it's 4WD. I think I would recommend the same advice as what you are already getting. TRD is not needed, 4WD is an ideal inclusion if you can grab one. If it was always on pavement I would lean towards 2WD advice.
