    I've used 0000 steel wool...i can tell you that it does not scratch chrome.
    Of course if you go that route test it on a spot that can't be seen first.

    TL : DR - Chain snapped on the highway, ripped a piece off the motor. Pulled the motor, got it tig welded shut, replaced the chain and sprockets, rebuilt the forks, rebuilt the master cylinder for the hand brake, replaced the snapped echaust studs, installed a low profile 12 bar, installed new fairings, painted the tank, got new moto dynamic brake lights/turn signals, and added mirror block off plates.
