Are Gen 3 Tacomas as unreliable as Tacomaworld makes them seem?

Well, your tacoma is probably still worth 90+% of what you bought it for. Go find a slightly used F150 as I'm sure it would be worth 50-60% of what it was new. So technically you're only learning the expensive way when you invest your money into a vehicle that will depreciate twice as fast.

Unreliable? No. Mine does exactly what I expected when I bought it. It will serve me well for years.

 

Get a Ridgeline and don’t look back.

 

This reminds me of one of the main gripes with the car I used to drive: the turning radius. Those who knew about it almost laughed at how awful it was, and those just getting one would hate on it because "how can anyone live with it. It's awful and you can't park worth a shit". Could they have done it better? yes. Do you learn to work with it? Yes. Or you cut your losses, sell it, and move on

It's worse when you have a car like that and you full well know it's turning radius sucks, but you buy it and expect it to turn like a bicycle. That's the problem with most of these forums. The guys and girls that are overly happy with their Tacoma's knew exactly what they were buying. The people that bought the 3rd gen expecting gobs of torque at the low end and expected pulls similar to a twin turbo'd v8 are disappointed. A lot of people test drive the truck and buy it and proceed to bitch about the power delivery as if they didn't test drive the truck beforehand.

nah, i wish. 06 V70R. People joke about them turning like a carrier, but it's pretty awful and hilarious having to make a 3 point u turn when 3500's are doing it no problem. Still have it because it's such a fun car to drive. Gonna run into this stuff no matter where ya go. Sometimes ya just gotta sit back and watch the madness.

I'd get the older one. I enjoy playing the game of "is it a pilot or ridgeline" when you see one coming towards you in the newer models

It is! Quality entertainment for the road.

 

I knew my experience would draw a lot of hate.
But it is reality. Over 17 years I have made multiple trips to my other place. And due to aging parents close by, I'll be making a lot more, sadly as they need more help.
In those 17 years I have taken many vehicles.
None threw fits like the Tacoma.
It can't do it. You may not like it, but it can't function on grades using the CC.
I love it outside of that and even posted about my local travels today really testing it. Using it locally up some pretty steep stuff, it works and works well.
Hit that CC and the truck is a mess.

 

If that's what you're mainly having issues with, then I can understand. Haven't used it much myself, so I can't speak from too much experience

 

Need to counter this. I drive my manual 2020 TRD OR across the Sierras to sea level (4500' to 8500' and back 0' to 8500') with zero issues. On a not exactly major highway with lots of turns and steep grades.
Do I just have lower expectations? Maybe, but to say it was made for nothing but flat ground is, generally, simply not true.

Just commenting that your posts read like over exaggerating and whining. But that is my opinion and it’s a public forum, so actually nothing personal, if that makes sense.

I have the same truck, and don’t have the same experience, but I don’t use cruise control.

Compared to the 2nd gen, I think the assembly is not quite as good as there seem to be more leak issues, but the still seems to be well built rigs. Outside of the rear diff leak (which shouldn't happen) my FIL's 2017 has 100k miles and no other issues or repairs, just regular maintenance. Not bad. His shifting evened out over time and shifts a bit better without the firmware.
