About the only thing different is diabetes in dogs is controlled using weight and not blood sugar in dosing.

I'm probably gonna adopt this dog tomorrow, its only 5 months old, the person at the place said it is a golden retriever mixed with a Scandinavian duck tolling retriever! Haven't had a dog in over a year, hopefully I can finally drive around with a cool new dog for the first time :D

It's just come on so suddenly. But then, he's 11 and I need to remember that.

He's had a pretty good day today. Skipped the burger and went for something a bit healthier.

    Some really cool shit
The same thing happened to my dog in January. Bear just fell off the bed. Maybe he was trying to get up in the morning, but I just hear him flop on the ground at 0430. Very stressful next few hours waiting for vet to open up. Thought I was losing him that day. Lotta tears from wife and I. Turned out to be Vestibular Syndrome. Combine that with the degenerative discs in the back was a slam. Took him over a month to get over the syndrome. Meaning, he wasn't able to move around on his own for almost a month, then, movement with help for another couple weeks. He was up on his own middle of Feb, which coincided with his 15th birthday. Never fully recovered from the vestibular. Still leans to one side, a bit. Struggles to get up and down the stairs, but still makes it. Can't walk much more than about a couple hundred yards at a time. Still wants to retrieve. Still wants treat every minute of the day. Bear is in the foreground. Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

Happy 11th Birthday Riley. Good for picking a healthier option.

That was Annie last year, shortly after she turned 13 (yes I know she's older than yours, but she's also a mutt and smaller than Riley) she could hardly stand in the tub when I gave her a bath and she couldn't jump in or out ot the subie. She goes down hill on something every month or three.... besides the degenerative disc's, she also has a torn cruciate ligament in her knee. She walks a lot slower these days, no more trotting, just a walk, very slow at times. Just going to say thank God for pain killers and pill pockets!

I know this seems horrible, but the insulin shots work. Our 10 y.o. schnauzer just came down with it 2 months ago. She was starting to have trouble walking also. We actually measure her food on a scale and give it to her exactly 12 hours apart. She takes shots twice a day. She has lost a little weight and gets around very good now. It was a water retention thing and once her insulin dosage was regulated, she was like a puppy again. In place of snacks, she gets frozen green beans. It works great. Don't give up just yet.

Thanks. I’m certain the insulin helps. But the bigger issue is mobility. Once he loses that, his quality of life diminishes by a lot.

Don’t do it. Wait until 12-14 months. He needs the vital testosterone for growing.
