The Sport didn't come out until 2005 with the second generation Tacoma, I believe.

Sport vs. Off Road is a night and day difference on what you get, IMO.

1st off, they are both Toyotas and are both GREAT trucks...

4WD always over 2WD, no need to go any further unless you are a city slicker and would never be off dry pavement.

Sport ('05-'08) has a limited slip differential and sport Bilstein shocks.
Sport has color matched bumpers, etc.
Sport has a decorative hood scoop (serves no mechanical purpose)..
Basically, Sport is mostly for looks... and that is important to many, why a good thing it is offered.

Off Road is for function and ability. It has a locking rear differential, Bilstein off road shocks, off road/ all terrain tires, and since the 2009 year model the Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) system and hydraulic brake booster for highly effective limited slip traction control in 2WD (AUTO LSD) and 4WD-Hi (TRAC). In 4WD-Lo, the A-TRAC provides a 'smart locker' on the front and rear axles that will permit you to reach the places that used to require aftermarket front lockers. A-TRAC does not inhibit steering on the trails, something lockers cannot do.

Are you a street cruiser or an adventurerer? Sport or Off Road... Toyota has them both!
