I'd bet the next gen of both will be hybrid. It'll piss off the purist, but that's the direction everything seems to be going.

It is coming, no doubt. People will adjust.
I recently bought an Accord Hybrid for the mileage.

I’m thinking about a test drive also. I was looking at one to pull 5500 pounds of boat with. I don’t really want to drive a full size truck but want/need the towing capacity.

Yep. Holding on to my 1st gen until the next gen tacoma & tundra. I'd have no problem buying a hybrid truck when the time comes.

Last two work trucks were Tundras. Great for that. But now I’m retired and wanted less bulk.

The Tacoma is more nimble yet still carries all I need.

I would love an Accord but I really don't like that they got rid of the coupe. That's what was selling me on them up until 2015 :(

I had a gen1 tundra, great truck overall, but the fuel economy wasn't good. I do miss its smooth comfortable ride and wider bed than the tacoma, but wouldn't go back unless they built the tundra that size again. Their just too large now, and still get crappy fuel economy.

So if Tundra gets 14 mpg and Tacoma gets 19 mpg and you drive 16,000 miles per year and gas is $2.50 per gallon, you're spending $750 more on gas per year in the Tundra.

Lets say you compared an F150 to Tundra and the F150 got 19 mpg, which I think it optimistic for something like a 3.5 EB. Is it really that much of a deal breaker or a decision point.
I bet if you kept both trucks for 5 years and then sold them, you would easily make up the ($750x5) $3750 in resale value between the Tundra and F150. Of course if gas went up to $4-$5 a gallon things would look a bit different.

I did the same on Friday when a coworker gave me a ride back after dropping off a Uhaul. But, I had the opposite impression. It was just too big for me to be comfortable. It is not just the Tundra. All of the full sizers feel like a condo rolling down the road these days. Front seat or back seat.

Yeah, the Taco has a low roof line that hampers me in my garage and other tight parking spots, but I can live with that and all the other goodies it brings.

When pickups were used as utility vehicles they were sized and rated accordingly. When they started to replace the family station wagon folks demanded more room and creature comforts. They got bigger and bigger.

If you look at a Tacoma/Ranger/Colorado they are about the size of trucks from before they became soccer mom vehicles. The same thing happened to Jeeps and early SUV’s.
This occurred as people were becoming more urban and less rural. Vehicle manufacturers identify the market and build to that market.

Think about it. How many here use there trucks as work vehicles as pickups were originally intended? Heck how many 4x4’s, of all types, have you seen that have never been on a gravel road much less boondocking.

Except the f150 is not nearly as reliable as the Tundra!, it is ranked #1 in reliability!

As the tundra now sits on dealership lots I would never buy it. Same principle as the frontier, I'd rather wait a few more years for the next generation, then I'd maaaaayyybe consider it but even as a converted toyota fan, it's easy to see that there are better full size options out there. The ram rebel looks amazing and has the technology upgrades to boot (doesnt it have like a 12" touch screen in those things!?). The new F150 looks amazing too and even has a hybrid option as well.
